Title: Tools required for top end overhaul
Post by: Martin_1962 on 10 March 2009, 10:06:49
So far got

Large torque wrench

full set metric spanners & sockets

Enough Torx & star I hope

What else do I need?

I think I will need a new valve spring compressor, mine is ancient.

Also which sealants for where?

Will I need help?

The cambelt does scare me a bit.

Er....

T55 and T60 (I think) torx bits (good ones as cheap ones will shatter on the head bolts) for head bolts and cam sprocket bolts.

Green snot sealer for the front cam bearings

Stem seals

A good valve spring compressor for multi valve engines

You wont need stem seal removal pliers in this case!

A litre of paint stripper for cleaning

Wet and dry plus some emery.

Grey sealent for the coolant plate and stat housing

Possibly some other odds and sods

And I'll be wanting to borrow a cam locking kit :o :o

Do you have the part numbers for the snot and other sealant?

Isn't there a special spanner for the botto, pulley?

Head bolts - got a Halfords T55 - should I get a spare?

I would get a spare torx bit for the head bolts, see if you can find an impact one....it should be more resistant to the shock loads you will experience when trying to undo the old bolts.
You also need a long nuckle bar and possibly a pipe extension for it, and a 24?mm open-ended spanner to hold the camshafts whilst undoing the sprocket bolts.

Will look for impact version

Got my long bar for the 1/2" socket drive, also got 24mm and 22mm spanners and quite a few imperial which could be requisioned.

Although yet to break one, not sure I'd trust a halfords torx bit on a head bolt  :-/

Can you check the T60?

The garage over the road gets a Snap On van - might ask them for a T55
