Title: Cranky or Cammy?
Post by: Debs. on 24 February 2009, 14:24:19
Debs` `99 2.5 V6 'Pup-Mobile' was (most-unusually) reluctant to start this morning; it seemed to be "fighting the starter" and required frantic efforts to catch the 'firing' with my throttle foot....a symptom I know-well, as I had the same problem in my previous Miggy (a 2 Ltr. 16v) when the cam sensor failed.

I haven`t had time to break out the paperclip yet, but I`m assuming that when I do, it`s going to reveal a crank or cam sensor failure.....I am wondering if it is better to change them-both at once?

......and (approx.) how much would the two sensors cost, bought on a trade-club (that is; if I can persuade a kindly, 'nearby' OOF`er to let me use their T.C card.) ::)

Your welcome to my card, can either buy and post, or can meet up.
Can also use my diag tool if you want a play  ;)

I wouldnt bother replacing sensors which aren't reporting a fault, could just be introducing more unknowns.

:y Thanks so much for the kind offer Jimbob, that`d be so much appreciated; I`ll have a bit more time tomorrow so will break-out the 'paperclip' to see what`s what; then take it from there.....we`re long overdue a meet-up for a cup o`tea aren`t we? ;)

If it's a square plugged, metal bodied crank sensor (the more expensive one) I have one I purchased in error you can have for £55 :y :y :y

As MDTM says, V6 cam sensors never fail.

Not convinced its crank sensor either, though I'm sure the paperclip will prove me wrong ;D

Debs yours is likely to be oval plug, plastic end near oil filter - on TC I paid £42.80 + VAT recently for mine.  Hope that helps - part nş is 90492061

Had a good read of the appropriate OOF maintenance guide and Tried to 'paperclip' the "pup-mobile" today; but no amount of bridging pins would provoke a flash code. :-/

I`m guessing there might be a wire loose/disconnected somewhere(?)....I`ll have a deeper 'poke around' behind the fuse/socket panel on Sunday; when I have more free-time.

The engine started just-fine today; no hint of the previous recalcitrance. :-?

I have a 'proper' code reader if you want to try that instead?

your EML does come on (and go off) when you start the car I take it?

Yes, the EML cycles at start-up.....I`ll have a poke-about first and see if there are loose wires/contacts at the diagnostic socket and report back......thanks Jimbob :y

Just to update the topic:
I eventually was able get the codes: there were the 'usual suspects', but the major one was '19' (that`s "N-N-N-N-Nineteen" a`la Paul Hardcastle) ;D

When I had a 'root about' near the crankshaft-sensor itself, the cable`s aluminium wrapping and the insulation was crumbling apart in my hands....I have soldered-in a temporary replacement cable (and the engine now starts and runs ok) but I doubt if the repair has the long-term integrity of a 'real' part; so, when finances permit (next month), I`ll be getting a genuine Vx sensor and swapping it for the pro-tem (Deb-bodged) one. :y
