Hi Guys!
I’ve read and re-read the how 2s about topping up the auto box fluid and they are great but I’m going to be doing a full sump off change.
The guides say to have the engine running whilst topping up the oil which I assume is to get it circulating round the box and torque converter but if the box is bone dry as I’ve dumped all the oil out, would it be best to put a fair amount in before starting the engine? I don’t like things moving with no lube! ::)
Thanks in advance! :y

Yes mate top it till it starts to trickle out then start her up, keeping it topped up till it starts to trickle out again

To add, fill with engine off, then turn engine on, select all gears, top up till fluid runs out with car level, then level plug back in WITH CAR STILL RUNNING.
So if using jack / stands (my method)
UP
Fill
run out
Start
select all gears
Fill
Run out
Drop to level
when fluid stops running out
UP
level plug back in
DOWN
Go for a short drive
UP
refil to overflowing
drop til fluid stops
UP
Level plug back in
DROP
Engine Off, Job done.
beware of the cats once warm, they are close to filling hole and can smart a bit ;)

Let me know how you got on - I'm wondering what to do first on mine!

Problem is even after doing all the above the most you will have changed is 4.4 litres, ie just over 50%, the system holds 8.4 litres from dry. Do as above twice more and your up 87.5% !!!!
You need 12 litres of Dexron 3 to reach that % of new fluid.

Surely if I take the sumps off and empty the box then start to fill, start the car, continue to fill, short run, top up then that would change all the oil?
Won't it?!?! :-/

You won't get all of the old oil out, but you will refresh it.

Hmmm! Oh well it should still do the box better than the 90,000 mile oil thats in it now!
Thanks for all your help guys!

It should make quite a difference.

Yes, renew as much of the old ATF as as you can, it will make a difference, use a good name Dexron 3.

I got 2 cans of Fuchs TITAN ATF 4000 for £20.17+vat for 5Lts. Which I thought wasn't too bad. 8-)
