Title: ominous 4 beeps

Recently when I get out of the car and lock the door, I get 4 loud beeps from under the bonnet. Is this something to do with the power sounder ?.

Correct, it's lettign you know the batteries are on the way out, you can just remove the power sounder though.  The alarm will still work.
