Title: Massive Water Loss

Hi

Hope you can help me, did my usual checks yesterday oil water tyre pressure etc and everything was ok. Coming to work this morning i glanced down at my dash and my temp was over 100 with the temp light on. Pulled over straight away and to my surprise the water tank was completely empty, had a look for any obvious leaks and could not see anything except water escaping from the back of the engine, however this seemed to be more of a leak under pressure than anything split or broken.
Waited for the engine to cool then filled back up with water, steadily made my way to work and will look at it later when on lunch.
Is there anything is should be looking out for other than split pipes etc. Water pump was only changed about 5000 miles ago so i would assume that is not the fault

any help at all would be appreciated.

not sure how i would check that but i will have a look to see if there is any guides on here.
The only thing that is troubling me is that on friday when i was giving the car some hammer the engine managment light came one but after slowing down it went off, i meant to do the paper clip test but never got round to it, is this just one of those things or possibly related??

Slightly mystified as to why that should matter.  The water system is pressurized so you it's doing you a favour if it's squirting out.  It's the dribbly ones that cause a headache to find.

Water pump is not likely to manifest as a leak at the rear of the engine.

HBV is there as mentioned but so are hoses to it.

Don't rule out a split hose.  it sounds as if you will find it fast when you have the time.

just had a quick look around the site to find any info relating to HBV, all i can find is a picture, how would i be able to determine if its knackered or not, will obviously check the hoses etc this lunch time when on break.
If it does turn out to be hbv how much is this likely to cost and how easy is it to change??

i think my hbv is on the way out if i have the temp set to say 22 it will loose coolent but if i keep it on hi it doesnt so maybe you could try that as a guide to hbv failure

Stand by the drivers side wheel arch and look under the scuttle along the back of the engine.  The HBV is about the size of a small tin of beans and you will likely see signs of damp or discolouration in the vicinity.

Also try turning your AC off (or on if it was off) as often this will affect the leak.
