this has been a long running fault on a mate of a mates car. The abs light was on when he got it, now the MOT is due and hes realised its actually quite a good car for the money he wants it fixed.
However i am concerned it does not have any speedo issues, the owner says it does not have traction control even though its a cdx...?
We dont know the part number yet hes in the process of sorting that out. In the mean time can anyone advise whats involved? I am presumeing its similar to mine, and sited under the power stearing reservoir near the wing? Is its a case of unplugging the loom and removing the next component in line, swap the part with one of similar part number and refit? Not done one of there before... :-)
Cheers

Won't have Traction as it's not a V6
Sure it's not the ABS Sensors / toothed sprocket?
ABS Module is in the same place as yours.

thanks Andy, we had it on a reader, it came up with abs module iirc. It was a while ago since we looked at it and i have forgotten half the details.
Looking at mine( in the dark) earlier, i take it the loom plugs directly into the module? Is the ecu in the module or are we talking 2 different things.
Am i confusing the issue with the v6 abs ecu issues
we see no here?

ABS system is the same AFAIK.

I'm sure someone removed the ECU with the unit in situ.
But odd that the speedo still works, what code reader did you use? I wonder if the DTC isn't being reported 100% truthfully by the code reader - perhaps being interpreted as a more generic OBDII code?

Hi Chris
If it only has the ABS lamp on but the speedo is working, look close at the front wheel sensors.
I would try cleaning them and then check the wires for any dinks.
Failing that try getting live data from the ABS module.

Hi Iain we did all that last time i think. Live data from a snap on reader(generic as Andy rightly suggests) gave no issues with the sensors and the only code was with the module. I have suggested a tech 2 session to confirm more accurately if its module or ecu, but the guy seems reluctant to travel to Alton fora diagnostic with Kevins Tech 2.
Would the fact that its giving a module code and therefor "communicating" with the reader suggest the ecu is ok? Only tech2 would know for sure i guess...?
-
Is the ABS working or not ?
The live data should record whats going on in the system.
Just an idea .........disconect the battery and lock + & _ terminals together over night, that should clear any false readings, we use this alot so I know it works.
If no change go to Alton with it.
P.S. Volvo man back next week :-/

The "normal" ABS ECU fault is that it packs up entirely and won't communicate with a code reader, IIRC, so there's hope.
No problem to put it on the Tech 2, of course. :y

Drove it in the rain back end of last year with what turned out to be 4 illegal tires. Abs def not working. I lively trip you might say. Hes not the most responsible owner in the world, bless him.
Thanks Kev, i will forward the invite again but i am not confident he will accept. Lead the horse to water and all that...
Cheers Iain. Valve body out when i get a chance. :y
