I went to top up my oil last night and there was a milky sustance on filler cap and filler tube. Car is a 2.6 v6 with 54,000 miles 2001. It dipped normal colour. No water loss or other probs. It uses a litre of oil about every 4000 - 5000 miles. If it wasn't for the colour I wouldn't be worried. The car runs perfectly. Any input or advice would be much appreciated.

Do you do a lot of short journeys?

dont worry about it. Normal. Esp if with short journeys or very sedate driving. Have a search for mayo on filler cap, its been well covered on here. :-)

plenty. it rarely goes far

i had exactly the same prob at begining of week with my 2.5. in the faq section somewhere on this site it tells us that the this happens with a lot of short runs. ive been blasting mine up and down the A1 and noe its gone. although just to be sure i did change the oil and filter myself, and thier was no contamination of the oil in the slitest.
hope this helps

In that case it is recommended you undertake 3,000 mile oil changes with a new oil filter. ;)

I agree totally, also regular sessions cleaning the breathers. As I do lots of short journeys I have taken the filler neck off mine and put the cap directly in the rocker cover I.E. no mayo ;) I just pop it back on when I top up or change the oil :y
