Title: My Omega elite, sometimes overheats

Hi guys i have had my VauxhALL omega elite 2.5 V6, since 85.000 miles. anything i have done to it has been done by choice. I have  done all disc/ brake pads and  track rod ends ( which i felt wasn't required but MOT insisted). At 94,000 miles i have just done the full timing kit which only cost me £234.00 ( My choice) . i have never had any probs with this car, except i didn't get the code for the stereo and after a flat battery have no stereo so forgotten code.  also it has a tendency to overheat a little in traffic build up. This may be in the long term, the only problem i have ( someone sujested i might have a blockage in the radiATOR ).
I get surprisingly good fuel consumption, and even more surprisingly when totaly loaded with camping gear.
My intension is to run this car all the way, so i am hoping to keep it on the road.
any advice is much appreciated.

by overheating does it go into the red zone??? never seen a cooked v6 before

is it leaking coolant if so how much??

dont be tempted to use radweld as that can block radiators like i discovered on the Ashtray now the HG has gone on it

overheating could just be a blown fuse on the cooling fans. Now IIRC what happens is at about 92 one fan comes on at half speed which is usually enought to cool things down. If it gets to 95 both fans come on at full speed and thats very noisy but cools things down quickly.

Do you know if the fans are working at all ? Run the engine with the bonnet open and watch to see what happens. Ther is a fuse under the bonnet near the battery (green fuse) under a cover that could have blown. Happened to me a while back, once its blown the low speed doesnt work any more.

How is your coolant level, do you have to top it up ever ?

ETA: All the above applies to the facelift, I think the earlier models run a bit hotter (according to the guage)

omegas can be known to egt quite warm due to not very good air flow to the rad through the bumper especially under load when i am towing with mine the fan is on most of the time.  but its always worth giving teh rad a flush through to make sure

Thanks all, Bigdods it doesn't leak coolant and has never needed to be topped up.  A fan kicks up and is quite noisy at about 90ish but if stuck in traffic the engine will gradually over heat. I have never let it go as far as the red. I have resorted to turning the heat up full and blasting the fan full one time in an emergency, i was told this shouldn't work but actually seemed to. Also i have noticed that on a cold day the heater is either fully on high or cold if i turn it down 1 setting.
That maybe irrelevent.

stick the A/C on  :y seems to cool my'n down! :y

by over heating what temp then? in traffic on a summers day i have had my'n upto 100"c

im persuming its a v6? dont worry about it, v block's do run very warm when stood still, and if your fans kicking in around 90 thats fine, just dont let it get passed 110 then your talking about new head gaskets.

My 1000cc suzuki tl1000r runs up to 115 degrees c before the fan kicks in.

when i took it back to the dealership complaining it was overheating they all laughed and told me its normal when stood in traffic. It gets a bit sweaty in summer with my bike leathers on

thanks tmx   , after 15 mins  of heavy traffic it would nearly hit the red. the temp just keeps climbing if i am not moving..but 5 mins at 30 mph is enuf to even it out.i have once really hit the red zone in a jam...but pulled off and escaped later.My dad keeps telling me i have a block in the radiator..i guess its a minor prob but im concerned about it. thanks again all

my money is on a fan issue but you could get a ir/laser thermometer and test the rad for cold spots

I'd reckon on the root-cause being a restricted rad, or a sticking thermostat here.
First-off, I'd be giving the system a good flush with Forte, refilling with 50% antifreeze mix and see what happens.
