Title: Bad Vibrations
Post by: portomega on 28 March 2009, 13:14:16
I was coming down a pretty steep hill last night and as i was braking as the hill goes from 60mph to 30mph half way down i got alot of vibration from the steering wheel , i was braking pretty hard as the police like to hide a speed camera van at the bottom of the hill to catch people that dont slow down enough at the half way point ( sneaky gits!!!)
What could have caused such a vibration? warped disks? or could the tracking and balacing be out as i havent had it done it quite a while  :-/

Most likely warped disks, easiest way to check is to jack a wheel up and spin it slowly, you'll feel it bind in about the same place every turn :y

Often caused by keeping your foot on the brake pedal when stationary after hard braking.
The heat is then not dissipated from the area where the pads contact the disc.
Try Cynffig Factors for the discs. Vx for genuine pads, or Huw Jenkins in Nanty for EBC pads. Part number is DP937.

Normally vibration under braking is an obvious disc warping but in the omega worn wishbone bushes can cause this too, so before you run off ordering new discs make sure your wishbones are not kaput.  :y

not always disc related, could be worn wishbones, front bushes or steering idler arm.

Is it a 'vibration' ie fast, or does the wheel 'shake' ? For me it would shake or wobble, i replaced the pattern discs and pads with geniune (around £75 with TC)

Instant difference! Brakes is one area not to penny pinch

i would say that the wheel shakes, large slow vibrations

Hmm, sounds more like bushes then...

Does the vibration reduce as your speed does?

for me with discs if i brakes heavy ish at say 70, it would be smooth until 60 then wobble down though to 50, then smooth out again.

If its all the time its more likey to be bushes / wishbones i would say  :-/

its not at all times when braking its more when going from say 60 down to 40-30, below 30 or just normal braking it doesnt do it

It could indeed be wear in any of the bushes/joints, but I'd still be inclined to go for the discs, given the symptoms described here.
