Title: Dense white smoke from exhaust
Post by: ScottieMV6 on 28 March 2009, 15:52:45
As above.......had this problem this morning when i first started the car.

It was really thick for a couple of minutes then started to get thinner.

Any ideas?

Is it white steamy sort of smoke, or is it bluey thicker stuff?
Did it have an oily smell to it?

What was the outside temperature? Was it early? and was the dew still on the ground?

If it was 2 or 3 degrees and early with the dew most likely condensation. Mine gives off clouds when I go into work at 5:45am.

It was about 1 o'clock this afternoon. The smoke was white, definitely not blue and didn't smell of oil.

I was concerned that it was so thick!

I'm thinking ........ could it be, as said, condensation/moisture, then it disappears when the cats warm-up ........ sounds highly likely.
If so, I'd say nothing to worry about.

Not wishing to worry you but i had a head gasket fail recently, went between water jacket and cylinder 4 and apart from the sudden loss in power that was the first thing i saw in the rear view mirror, clouds of white steam.
Thinking back, exhaust had been a bit white for a while and i am wondering whether i had a water seepage through to pot 4 for a while now before it totally blew out.

i was woundering if it could be the head gasket too. get some one to rev the engine for you while you watch the header tank and if the water raises with the revs then the gasket has gone between a water way and a cylinder. you'll see what i mena if it does. if your not sure then is fine. its very obvious

you need to see some power loss..and some missfire..

having a compression test may give a better idea..

indeed but if he aint got a pressure tester that method is very good first stop to try rather than buying one (although they aint expensive).

but yeay he would be suffering from a loss of power too

Not sure that there is a loss of power but I do notice the engine hesitate a little when I accelerate but then I think there is an air leak somewhere too.

I'll get someone to rev the engine a little later and see what happens.  :y

You can rev  it yourself from under the bonnet.  :y
I think you'd know if your head gasket had failed.

Oh Yes. Why didn't I think of that. I think it is the loss of an hour!!  :y
