Title: Tensioner pointer confusion.
Post by: Bent valve on 29 March 2009, 23:46:05
I have fitted a new belt and tensioner kit to my 3.0ltr v6 today, and I am confused as to what the final position of the tensioner pointer should be.
after initialy setting the pointer to align with the right hand side of the lug, then turning  the engine over 2 revolutions, and locking the crank at tdc. the pointer swings down anti clock wise and aligns with the scribe mark on the lug. is this correct? it is vague on the cambelt dvd as to where the final position should be. Haynes manual does not say either. skf say it should be between 2-4 mm beyond scribe mark after 10 rotations of the engine. the Geoff and Pete how to says both marks should be aligned after 2 rotations.
Anyone know for sure?

should be on left edge if new belt - marking for used belt

retension, then 2 more revs, then check again, and repeat, each time ensure the pulley marking line up with timing tool, and tensioner correct

Upper edge of the marker for a new belt....aligned with the centre scribe for a used belt

the logic is that setting to the upper edge gives a slightly higher tension on the belt when new.  when it settles in then you'd expect the belt to fit more snugly, meaning it the tensioner backs off a bit.

I recently rechecked my belt after 7k miles:  pointer was on upper edge when fitted, it is now closer to the mid marker

Thanks for the advice chaps, I set it to the upper mark and finally got it running last night, after a top end rebuild which involved replacing numerous bent valves and guides ect.

My Knuckles are skinned raw, my backs aching, and my wallet is empty,
but it was all worth it because it runs like a swiss watch :y
