Title: overheating
Post by: DaviesEB on 31 March 2009, 09:42:14
Got to work this morning to find my Miggy overheating. The fan stayed one a good while before it stopped.

Also i did not see any indication on the temp gauge or red light warning.

There was something like oil sludge in the coolant reservior.

Any Help

It is normal for the fan to stay on for a while after switching off if the engine is hot, so don't be too concerned about that if its not otherwise overheating.

Funnily during Lunch i drove off and had a problem again. There was no water again. When i filled the tank i notice oil sludge in the Coolant reservior.

My mechmentioned that the cylinder head may be gone.

I added water and waited and the car started again.
What Next?

From what I know from people on here it definitely sounds like oil cooler. This is often misdiagnosed as head gasket failure.

I wouldn't use it though until confirmed and fixed. :y

What does the Oil cooler cost and how heavy. I am located in Africa. Liberia to be precise. I am managing it for now.

Yep more than likely the oil cooler, HG failure is rare.  Unless you run out of water of course and overheat her, then HG failure is entirely possible...

Around £200 all in, not sure about the weight though!

I must admit that i started using water for the coolant when it got low. Over a time now i have been using only water in the coolant reservoir. Will that bhe the cause?????

Sounds like you have a coolant leak too (HBV?).  Certainly using water over a long time will cause the oil coller to fail (corrode) eventually.

I know i once bought HBV in Accra. I do not know if they have the oil cooler..

Can you check cost of both items for me. Cheers

Genuine (apparently) oil cooler on Ebay for £99 plus postage http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-OIL-COOLER-93176626-VECTRA-OMEGA-CALIBRA-V6_W0QQitemZ160286849109QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item160286849109&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

HBV is around £30 from vauxhall. :y

Considering that the parts are no here at the moment. My mech advised that i keep Oil and water in vehicle and top them up when they get low. Can i manage this till i get parts/????????

If you have oil cooler failure, its best not to drive until its fixed.
Do you have an emulsion (creamy) fluid in the expansion tank? Or are you just losing coolant?

I am having this creamy greasy stuff in the expansion tank.

Just remember then that the longer you use it like this, more components, like the heater matrix, thermostat and radiator will be getting clogged with gunk...

I'd recommend against using it - not only is that creamy sludge getting everywhere and will be a swine to remove, but it is also DRASTICALLY reducing the cooling efficiency.  And you can't go by the gauge thinking its not getting too hot, as the sensors will be covered in the same mayo, and reading low.

I will second this asa i drove mine with a failed oil cooler and I'm still suffering from the after effects now! It takes ages to get all the gunk out of your system!

In this instance, what all do i need to change. The point is that it is pretty hard to find parts out here. Can anyone help me get most of these and let me know the cost of all i need to replace.

I had wanted to flush radiator and open clean cooler and replace with coolant instead of water. Any adhoc solutions. :( :(
