Title: Steering wheel is not straight anymore!
Post by: mark p m on 03 April 2009, 18:17:52
I had the tracking an tyres done and now the steering wheel is no longer straight.
Is it easy to get off (bearing in mind the airbag) and straighten up? Anyone ever done that?

Sounds like the wheel alignment has been done by adjusting one tie-rod only - rather than adjusting both tie-rods equally.

First off, I'd put the car up on ramps and take a close look at both rods.
Both should have near enough equal amounts of threads at each end. Repositioning the steering wheel on the column may get it looking correct, but effectively will give you a poor lock in one direction, due to unequal travel of the steering gear.

what made them mess with the tracking in the first place? Which is a waste of time by the way. Needs full set up usually.

Take the car back to the 'tyre place' and ask them to do the job correctly, don't even try to move the steering wheel as it can effect indicator cancel and other things.
