So I am driving in to work this morning going round a roundabout rather more enthusiastically than perhaps I should and theres a *thump* from the back end. Felt a bit like there was something in the boot that had shot from one side to the other. At the same time as the thump there was a bit of a wobble from the back end.
Hmm thinks me, that didnt sound good so i take it carefully for the next few miles. But nothing seems wrong.
Engine - Fine, running smoothly no warning lights
Brakes - Yep working fine
Auto Change - smooth, no lumps or bumps
Handling - Same as usual, waft-o-matic style no vibration at any speed
So I carry on thinking all is fine, no further drama until I get to work. I lower my window to use my car park pass and only then do I hear the chunk-chunk-chunk-chunk from the back. It varied with speed then disappeared as I crossed the cark park, then came back, then went again (I drove round the car park dfor a bit trying to pin the noise down).. anyway you get the picture.
As I had new rear springs recently I guess they have to be the #1 possible but the handling is fine and not sure problems there would result in the odd noises.
I had a poke around when I had parked up. None of the brake disks were particularly hot, all were warm, no brake components in places they shouldnt be. Nothing hanging down underneath, no fluid leaks. Bounced the front and rear end , suspension works as it should no odd noises.
So place your bets, will I get home and what will the cause turn out to be ?

im wondering if your hand brake shoes have come adrift :-/

Check your exhaust - one of the hangers could have snapped and you're exhaust could be flapping about.

Two good points - checked the exhaust its ok , but I think the handbrake shoes could be the source of the noise. Just drove it round the car park and tried gently tugging on the handbrake and the noise goes away. Maybe the big bang was jus tmy laptop moving around in the boot and totally unrelated to the noise !
I've arranged to pop into the garage tonight to get it up on the ramps for a quick look. Will it be obvious if the handbrake shoes have slipped or does that need some spanner work ?

you'll need to remove disc/drum to be able to see them :)
Worth check wheelbearing at same time

Gold star ! Had the noise on and off on the way home, pulled up at the garage, went to apply handbrake and .... Nothing ! Didnt need to put it up on the ramps to work out where the problem is..... booked in for tomorrow morning to have it all apart and probably fit new brake shoes.
