Hi All
Recently purchased a 99/T 2.5TD Elite. It has a rattle coming from the front of the engine. It sounds sweet when it is not at idle but as soon as the revs drop it sounds like a bag of nails.
I think I have tracked down the problem but am not entirely sure. I think it is something in the fan belt tensioning device. This has a small shock absorber type device built into it. The bottom of this is held onto the tensioner with an 8mm bolt which has a metal bush around it which in turn sits in a plastic bush. This plastic bush has become oval shaped, this is where I think the sound is coming from.
Went to my local dealer yesterday to find out if I could buy just the plastic bush but they only sold the complete shock absorber device, at £52 :o :o
Because im not sure this is the problem I really don't want to pay that much, does this sound like a common thing on these engines??
Cheers lads and lasses

Try it (very) briefly with aux belt removed to check it is something aux belt driven. Aux belt it best removed by removing the plated that the holds the turbo diesel plastics down.
Waterpump is aux belt driven, so only run for no more than 20s.
Tractors often seem to get a resonance at idle - one reason many run without the plastic covers over the injectors.
If it is that tensioner bush (I've double checked, I don't have a spare - pretty certain mine was donated to Omegatoy's tractor), ask one of the guys who have broken TDs if they have a spare.

QUICK FIX!!! although mine has been like it for 25k now ;D
remove tensioner and get a piece of copper tube that just fits over the pivot, press together and it takes out the play grease it pbviously basically its replacing the silly plastic bit I actually replaced both ends of mine like this and never had any more issues with it!!! :y

When Omegatoy's turns up here (not often, seeing as it spends most of its life in the sun), it's normally making some strange noise ;D.
Thinking about it, last time it was here Omegatoy, that was tensioner wasn't it?

nope!! think your tensioner went on mrs omegatoys td didnt it???
mine was noisy pulley we swapped wasnt it?? sure it was :-/ cos it had a fair bit of play/rumbling in the bearing when hot and break all when cold?? which was why it was so hard to trace? only happened after a good few miles and disappeared when the engine cooled suffieciently suffeiceintly/ suffieceintly 'dangle berries' enough :y
