Was you using a proper 36mm socket (preferable proper hex socket)?

Seem to recall not massively expensive new, though they have a habit of supplying wrong part.

It is 36mm hex for sure, only plastic so should not be too tight. If yours has broken, you either fit another, or there is a "How to" on here about converting to the screw on type filter, I think the TD is suitable.
I don't have a 36mm socket, so I have to get away with an adjustable, not ideal but does the job. In your case, you may be able to get a chisel in and tap it round, bear in mind the diameter is almost 4 inches, and you don't need to worry about damage. Another option is make up a tool, like a strap type oil filter wrench, hope you know what I mean.
Best of luck.

The "How to" is here, not done it myself, and you need to confirm you can convert theTD:-

It does sound like you have used a Torx on the Hex.

before removal, you need to get a replacement. Dealers don't stock it, and my experience of BMW sourced parts is a delay.

So go order a new one, and for now just change the oil and not the filter.  Not ideal, but best you can do until you have a new bit

Certainly won't be available in the aftermarket sector.

You could also try BMW or Landrover dealers - BMW used engine in 325tds and 525tds, LR in RangeRover 2.5DSE

You could convert to the older style TD filters with the metal cap on the fiilter canister, but a hell of a lot of work, and no gain.  And the filters are twice the price for the older type fitted to 2.5TD

Just read your link above - thats for v6 petrols only. Wouldn't work for TD engines.

The best type of socket to use is a 36mm LOW-PROFILE HEXAGON type with a 3/8" square drive.

These are available from good motor factors etc for around 5 quid each.
The more common bi-hexagon sockets simply tend to round-off the nut.

To remove the offending part, try using a strap wrench or start it turning with a chisel.
When you fit the new one, just tighten it firmly - don't 'murder' it up.

The low-profile socket only has a 3/8" drive - so there's the clue!

Will need a decent strap around it to undo.

I use a Impact type socket, simply because it was the only 36mm Hex one I could get locally (Halfrauds). Cost about £4 on halfords trade

You ARE putting the strap around the TOP bit???  Not the body lower down???  Just a thought.   :o

Hi mate, had exactly the same problem myself last weekend - nut snapped off the top. But but worry ye not - popped down to Halfrauds and bought a chain wrench affair for 6 squids. Fits over top of the plastic cannister with a bit of knuckle scraping and fiddling, but all you need is a 1/2 inch extension and ratchet to turn it. Only took 1/4 turn to loosen it and job was a good`un. MAKE SURE you get the right filter to replace though - theres 2 very similar and i got the wrong one 1st time round. :y :y

i think my only option is to get down vx and get a price on a new one then try and chisel the old one round if i break it then at least it can be replaced

Yes I agree, no point getting past the point of no return without the parts to finish. It is annoying people tighten plastic bits like this, there is no need. Best of luck.  ::)

Hi Gaz, sorry mate no pics till tomorrow, but i tried my usual strap and couldnt get enough `purchase` on the cannister, also tried the chisel solution but got too scared of breaking it!! got the cheap chain one and it got a much better grip. And yes it did seem stupidly tight!!

I am sure that strap will undo it - but I thought you had already tried one??? You are only undoing what is in effect, a plastic cap, it can only reach a certain amount of "Tightness". Good luck mate.  ::)

Hi Gaz, this is the one i used mate - should cure your `tightness` problems! Just pop in a 1/2" extention and ratchet and off you go. :y :y
