Title: Cambelt Kit - Engine Number query
Post by: HerefordElite on 05 April 2009, 21:05:31
Planning on doing my Cambelt very soon so have been out to check engine number to make sure I get the right one.

Number is on the block by oilfilter and i couldn.t be bothered to get on my hands and knees ::) but luckily i noticed a sticker with a barcode on the timing belt cover which reads 08206984: the engine number ha ha. (as long as nobody has replaced the cover :-/)

anyway if i trust that number (does make sense for an early '97R x30xe) can i still use a 9120501 Kit:

or do i have to use the newer 93188674 kit?:

Prefer to use Vauxcenter as they were good for my steering idler :-?

Why not just give your reg number and read the engine number off your logbook if needed?

just found that and it matches the sticker (which fell of when i touched it :D)

so like i said is it important to have the 93188674 kit or will the superseded 9120501 be ok? :-?

I don't mean to sound rude here but am I missing something? If you know your reg number and you have your engine number you will get the correct kit for your car  :-?

i know the right kit number for my engine was the 9120501 but apparently it's been superceded by 93188674.

I wondered if it was still ok to use 9120501 because that is the one that is listed by Vauxcentre (my prefered 100% feedback ebay seller)?

so stop being rude ;) :D ;D ::)

Stealer on trade club is cheap (listed against the Vectra and not the omega for some reason but its the same part).

The only difference between the kits is the tensioner backplate which can be kept as its only a cast mounting.

Bought all the bits from AutoVaux in the end and hired their Cam-lock kit.

One thing missing is the 30mm Offset ring spanner - loathe to buy one for just this job so asked at work.

Will a 11/16 Whitworth do? works out at 30.48mm AF and i don't believe there is a great deal of torque involved, more of a holding job??? :-/

Whitworth spanners equate to the thread size/diameter and not the bolt/nut 'Across the Flat' size.  ;)

How big is the overall diameter of the end of the spanner? Old spanners tend to be massive cos they were made without the modern chromium etc
It needs to fit inside the eccentric tensioner

it also needs to be cranked or you won't get it on the adjuster properly.  Its a bit disappointing that Autovaux don't include that with their kit rental as its a rather unusual bit of kit for the diy'er.

it is cranked obviously, but bit worried about the size of the head, i was going to try it against the new tensioner tomorrow but Autovaux have let me down as camkit is out of stock >:(.

say they getting stock in wednesday and will deliver next day (fingers crossed).

does anyone have a tensioner lying about and be able to tell me the ID so i can measure the OD of the spanner??? ;)

don't really want to spend £15 on a spanner i'm only going to use once :-/
