Didn’t even make it home! So had to join the AA and pull my pants down :'(
Did about 35 miles, everything was fine (ish).
Then the throttle pedal went dead. I looked at the dash to find the temp gauge in the red (Still ticking over though) :'( So VERY VERY quickly pulled over, switched off and opened the bonnet. :(
There was water pissing out of the coolant bottle.
Cut a long story short, I'm about 90% certain that its the water pump which has failed. I started it back up after it had cooled down a bit, and it ran fine, however there was no heat coming from the heater in the cabin, and the radiator hoses weren't red hot to touch (yet gauge was half way).
Left it running about a minuet, and the gauge slowly started to creep up, so I switched it off, and called the AA :'(
The engine still starts up first time, and revs up ok etc. Should it be ok after getting that hot? :-/
-
if its blowing back out the tank it sounds like head gasket
-
water pump falling off is very common mate, but it depends how long you drove it whilst it was hot as to whether or not you done the hg, you obviously got it hot enough for the ecu to shut the engine down so it may be touch and go, best to change the water pump and try it on the road,
water pump is 45min job tops!!
-
when the engine is "COLD" fill the resovoir tank up leave the top off start the engine if there are bubles comming from it ..its the head gasket if there are no bubles its the pump
Good luck :y
-
These engines are safe to 110C - which is 100C on the gauge, and the gauge has a 12s delay.
If it hit the red, you are definately in the realms of possibility of head damage. If the head is damaged, you're in trouble, as BMW state that you must not skim these.
I may have a crap pump here if you wanted to try one before buying a new one (to check no head damage). Postage only, or collect.

Whats up with the 'crap' pump? ;D Maybe interested.
Just been out to start it again, and left it running for a minuet. There’s no bubbles coming out of the header tank, and its not using any water. Still runs sweet as a nut. If the hg has gone, its going to be scrapped. :-/

Its still in old block, no idea if its still OK, but was working fine when I did briefly have that engine running 18months ago ;D
Pop your pump out, if its impellor-less, then it may be worthwhile trying mine (which I'll try to remove and look at tomorrow), and if that cures your problem, worth then paying £50 for a new one (TD pumps are quite expensive, genuine is over £100 iirc)

A man of your calibre should be able to sort out a head gasket :y. You had no heat from the heater cos your water was on the road & not in the matrix :(.

Don't underestimate what a bastard these are. The chain tensioners, like the crap senator ones, are a pain in the arse. Also, the head, like said crappy senator one, will make your 'dangle berries' turn square when you lift it off.

Been there done that. Piece of pi$$. At least the 'cr4ppy' Senator, like the diseasal BMW lump has cams driven by a chain instead of a shitty rubber band!!! ;) ;) ;) :y :y
Don't forget that most of us can stand closer to the car than you ........ ::) ::) :y

I only lost about a litre of water thinking about it....
Dont think I would fix it TBH, Like I said, if the HG has gone, then the car is off to heaven hell!
The car was 390 quid, and I had to join AA at the roadside! Not sure how much its cost to be towed home as they told me that many different things, I think its around £300-350 ish!! :'( >:(
What a waste of frigging cash >:( >:( >:( >:(
I wasn't a happy bunny, think there was more steam coming out of my ears than there was under the bonnet! ;D

How much is a head gasket? If it's as much as a Senator's - £60 - fix it using the minimum of new bits and flog it as a runner. Surely better than 'giving' away a none runner.
-
Its hard to say without being there but from whats been written i dont think the head gaskets gone .....the heater wouldnt be warm if the water pump gone .....its like having the fire on without the cental heating pump on
-
Join the AA's part and labour policy mate.
For less than £10 a month they pay for any genuine repairs up to £475 and you can claim up to 5 times each year.
Paid for the hg to get done in our previous Omega no problems at all.
Hope you get it sorted mate
:)

And said rubber band is so much better and cheaper to replace that gay chains that stretch all over the shop. Even when you take into account you have to change it 2.5 times more often.
BMW diesel has an added chain issue - to replace, head and sump has to come off :o

Ian_D - I have removed waterpump from block. Its definately on the way out, just beginning to show the telltale signs of it coming apart.
Yours if you fancy an afternnon out to deepest brackley, or if you want to risk the postal service (may be a few days before I can get to PO though.

Cheers for having a look mate, Last night I bodged a water pump to the coolant system (from a washing machine belive it or not) and had it running for a good 30 mins. It didn’t pressurize up so im hoping im lucky!
I phoned a trade supplier and they was 40 quid for a new one, and can get it for me today! So i've ordered that.
Again, Thanks for the offer though! :y And fingers crossed, lets hope she lives! :-X

No probs, gave me the enthusism to strip that engine to bits so I can slowly dispose of it ;D
My old TD when it had its original head/gasket problem never really pressurised at idle, but as soon as you started driving it.

Oh right :-/
I did give it a fair amount or revving up etc, but I guess this is still not the same as driving!
Daft question... If the HG has gone, how far would I need to drive it? We talking a mile or two, or a 50 mile round trip?

I'd say a couple of miles if it was like mine, and see what pressure had built up. I didn't think mine was head gasket or head, as everyone I'd seem before was pretty spectacular...
-
Ive fitted a new water pump, and its looking fairly promising up to now.
I left it ticking over for 10 mins, and there was very little pressure (just squeezed the radiator hoses).
I then held the revs up at about 3000ish for a good few minuets (neighbours will love me, the viscous fan was running most of the time – then that fixed itself as it was running right from been cold ;D!), there was a little bit of pressure in the hose, but nothing more than I would expect due to engine now been midway on the temp gauge.
Revved it up a lot for a few mins, and then left it ticking over again for about 20 mins... All seemed fine.
Switched it off for about half an hour while I checked the rest of car over (found a few bigish problems :-/ - but should be easy to fix!).
Started it up, and went round my housing estate about 6 times (only did about 2.5 miles as its tiny!), and gave it as much stick as I could (brakes + wishbones are in a very bad way, so had it locked in 1st most of the time for engine braking!). And its didn’t pressurize.
All in all, its now been running 1hr 55 mins (I reset the stopwatch on the MID when i fitted the new pump! ;D) , and its not spat any water out, and I haven’t removed the cap either! :)
-
Right, Im going to bite the bullet and hope its ok...
Going to order some wishbones for it! ;D

Well hope you have sorted it with the new pump, had the old one broken up then?
Can I ask was it a difficult job? thinking of doing mine, just for peace of mind really.

Yes, old one shattered :'(
Dead easy to change, hardest bit was removing the viscous fan!
Would say an hr max to change it.

Yep - about an hour to change it!
Don't forget to add 5 litres of Vx antifreeze - that's 50% strength.

I reckon a water pump is 15mins, assuming that stupid gay bmw fan comes off. And stays off.
Sounds like its OK :y :y

She was running about 3 hrs, with no pressure buildup, so I drove to town (about 3 miles) and all seemed fine... So thought, balls to it, and continued to my grans, a further 3 miles!
Got there checked pipes and all seems fine. Then drove about 6-7 miles back on the ring road at 60mph.
Car seems fine through city, but feels very weak on the ring road. Or is this just because im used to my V6? It just goes gutless above about 40mph? and to cruise at 60ish, I needs about 60-70% throttle which seems a lot to me?
MPG through the city centre to my grans (at night so not much traffic - still hit evey light on red though) it did 31.9mpg :y (mid reading). Yet on the run back home on the ringroad, it only did 31.5mpg? :-? Any ideas?

6 or 7 miles isn't really enough to get an accurate reading, and a difference of 0.4mpg is nothing to get excited about. Even assuming it's accurate there's all sorts of things could cause it - you could just have been enjoying the drive back round the ring road with no traffic and so been driving a little more 'enthusiastically'. ;) It could even be case of your gran's house being at a lower level than yours, so it was downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back. (A satnav should tell you the height above sea level of both houses if you want to test that theory out!)
Using the trip computer in my Granada I found that on visits to my Dad in Somerset (170 miles each way, mostly M5) I consistently got about 0.5mpg better in one direction than in the other. I could never work out why!

Probably due to comparing it with the V6 ......
Get the tinker chipped next, and you'll immediately feel the difference, and improve the fuel economy too.
Mine now flies around the valleys at a proven 33 mpg, and I'm quite satisfied with it!
'PM' TheBoy or Omegatoy for the chip supplier.
-
yep chip is the way but didnt i read it was an auto?? if so usual disclaimer applies!! it will melt the ar 25 in a week!!!!! ;D

If im keeping it, I will stick an AR35 in, and then chip it!
The AR25 wont last 5 mins... its already done 188k! :o
-
The MID should be pretty accurate with the std chip, and over read by around 10-15% for chipped. Chipping does increase real mpg, and makes it a much better car. AR25 won't work for long though.

Is it normal for the TD to be VERY slow when its first started?
I'm not going to rag it when its cold, as I never do. But it takes ages to get to 30... or is it just me been used to the 3.0 still? :-/
Other than that, Its not that bad (well apart from the bloody viscous fan coming on when it feels like it! - thats coming off!) MPG on the way to/from work across city in a bit of traffic was 22mpg, so not THAT bad as it did involve the odd foot full here and there. ;D

Standard tractor just feels flat all the time - well underpowered. 0-60 of auto tractor around 12s. Mine was about 9.5s chipped.

Oh right, thats pritty good then! Will see what im doing with this tractor, and if I keep it, I will prob go down that route. However I may sell it and keep my eye out for a newer / lower mileage one. Having said that, I dont know... I love my V6 and knowing me I wont want to part with it, so god knows... No Idea what I want to do actually! ;D
