Hi,
Excuse my ignorence. I'm going try and replace the cam cover gaskets myself (and I'm new to doing this kind of thing), but before I start I want to make sure I've got everything I need.
Can you tell me, are the parts listed in the Cam cover gaskets guide (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564281) the same for the extended plenium (which I guess I have as it is longer than the ones in pics on this guide and the breather cleaning guide)?
Cheers,
Rob.

Yup
-
It is recommended that you clean the breathers at the same time seehttp://omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152598350.
Note that you will need 4 of 90500983 rather than 2 for extended plenums. Apart from that everything else is the same as far as I know :y

Why? The plenums are the same except for a longer nose at the front to give better airflow...

Because the breather bridge connects to an extended piece (hence 2 more O rings) that then connects to the throttles on the extended plenums.
-
Oh yeah so it does...doh...forgot the breather bridge is just the same as the short plenum but with an extension...as he said! lol
-
its pretty straight forward to do so don't worry just take your time and don't rush or you'll break somehting. you do need to take more off to get to them than you'd think, don't be tempted to do it with out removing the inlet manifold as you won't get the gaskets on tidy and they will leak again
-
You will also need a torque wrench that goes as low as 8nm ;)
-
If the breather box has never been removed from the plenum before you may find that the seal is falling apart - I'd recommend a new one: 90467543.
I did the usual overhaul on mine only to find that the seal had rotted and I couldn't drive the car for four days while I waited for another one (without the seal the car hisses and misfires cos the fuel / air levels are all over the place).
:y

Thanks all. I'll get all the parts and give it a go.

Well, I've amazed myself and have managed to do the cam cover gaskets!
I do have a concern though. When I cleaned the breathers I found that they wern't really blocked. I did get some dirt out, but I could blow through all the pipes fairly easily before I started.
The one which was most blocked was the 2nd pipe in the breather box, going to the carbon canister (whatever that is for).
So two questions really
1. Could something else have caused the cam cover gaskets to go (only gone on the right hand bank as you look at the engine from the front of the car)?
2. Should I clean the pipe going from the breather box to the carbon canister? I left this alone as I simply followed the instructions
Thanks Rob.

my breathers didn't seem that bad when i cleaned em.
The gaskets go hard with age (especially pattern parts) my bolt o rings were like glass and i had to chip them out!

Just age - mine were brittle
-
Thanks. I was hoping it was just down to age, the seals were quite hard.
I did the seals on both sides, even though only one side leaking. If age was the problem I'm glad I did as I guess it wouldn't have been long until the other side went!

Congrats! I have the same prob with my 2.6 facelift estate now it seems. Hot oil smell and slightly more oil consumption than one would expect. I'm a bit daunted to try and do this job in one day though. Don't know whether I can trust the local garage and don't know whether can afford the Vaux MD. Is anyone willing to have a go for me? I'd rather pay someone who kinows what they're doing than the local garage chappie.
-
Where are you based
-
South/West Yorkshire border I'm afraid. Am willing to drive reasonable distance though (as long as I can also drive back!) LOL!
Thanks for reply anyway. :y

PM sent ;)

for the record Elite Pete & Loo-Knee changed my CCGs - a great job done - all is leakproof now & hot oil smell gone.

Thanks Kevin, your cheque's in the post ;D

hahaha! Ye Kev, I read the thread. And Thanks for the info anyway.
I think from what i've read on here that I can trust these guys. Looking forward to meeting 'em. Thanks Kev. ...This is some forum!

Your valve seals have probably gone as well, just like mine and Mike Dundees

And mine :y
that begs two questions:
How do I know if these need changing?
How do I change them - I've looked for a guide on how to do it but can't find one?

There isn't a guide pur-say but if you look in the general chat section for thread "off with it's heads" then Mdtm went into it briefly :y
-
I am only cam belt kit, aux belt kit, a few tools, a few washers away from a complete set of parts.

Lots of bluey/grey smoke on start up and oil needs topping up more than normal.
-
Aha... I have exactly the same problem. My VX main dealer told me that my cam cover gaskets have gone and they need doing. I am very reluctant to pay the price that they quoted me - £481.25!!! If there is anyone around my neck of the woods (Stansted-ish) that can do it for a realistic price, I would gladly give cash. I am prepared to travel a fair distance to get it done as i'm sick of the smoke coming from the engine! :P

Phew, I've not got the blue/grey smoke and the oil seems fine now that the CCG have been done.

Im doing that exact same job now and it takes quite a while to do, as you have to remove both the top and bottom intake manifold sections, multi-ram system as well as disconnecting and plugging the fuel lines and throttle coolant pipes ect...all in all very long winded but not particularly difficult, just a lot to do and lots of pipes to label!!! :o
If your cam cover seals are leaking you will probably find the spark plug wells are full of oil too, so you will need to empty all that out (I used a empty water bottle with a bit of small flexible rubber pipe to suck the oil out from the holes) and clean the surfaces and ignition coils etc. Also it is a good idea to check the condition of the manifold sealing rings (both upper and lower sets), which might need replacing.
I was quoted about 600 quid from my local specialist which i though was very OTT at the time but you can see why :D Also prices for new seals from Vauxhall seem to be ridiculous, so its probably worth shopping around for some sensibly priced ones.
That said, while there is a lot to do, its not especially difficult and you will save yourself and absolute packet, but plan on having no car for at least 3-4 days, if your spending your afternoons doing it. :y

I wouldn't!
I have tried FAI, Elring and a few even cheaper ones....noen of them lasted!

Mine is the 3.0, what difference does it make to the valve seals and knowing if they need changing?
Cheers.

Not an issue on 3.0 or 2.5, it only affects a small period of production on the 2.6 and 3.2
