Title: Battery life
Post by: aoliver on 17 April 2009, 20:06:01
The battery in my 2.5 CD is 18 months old and will go flat if I leave the car parked for more than a week. I had it checked by an auto electrician who measured a drain of about 65mA on the battery with the car parked and locked. He reckoned that is about normal. He then checked the battery condition which was also OK. This means that my fully servicable car won't start if I go on holiday for a week and leave it at the airport. Can this be right ?

i would check stuff like
boot light
glove box light
door lights

just to see if they stay on when the car is locked

can depend on the quality of the battery too it might be okay..........but you need a good quality battery if the cars sitting for a week at time reguarly. My car can sit 3-4 weeks at a time reguarly and starts first turn of the key.

I've got a gel type battery fitted as I was having some issues before but no problems now, holds the charge for a longer period.

That's interesting as it does sit for up to a week at a time most of the year, and definitely wouldn't start after 3 weeks. What exactly is the gel battery you have ?

Do a google search for this Varta Gel AGM Ultra Dynamic Car Battery 12V 70Ah, that's what I've got fitted, it was a wee bit pricey, had no problems over that last 6-7 months since I had it fitted, slightly higher capacity than needed but had no problems.

If you've been told the battery drain is okay, it may be the solution but be sure first though.

Many thanks again. They seem to be about £140 so I'll flog this one on a bit longer - until I next go on a week's holiday anyway.

virtually all batts have a 3yrs warranty, get the manufacturer's agent to test it...

Is it charging adequately when the engine is running?

Have a look here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1225724099

Also, check the crimped connections to the battery terminals for security and check they are not getting warm when running.

i'm still on the original battery - 10 years old now.  car is left 1 -2 weeks betwen runs (mostly long when its used) and starts first time every time.  so after 18 months on a new batterys something is wrong
