Title: Alarm sounding
Post by: Ralph on 19 April 2009, 22:27:10
Suddenly, today, my alarm has started going off for no obvious reason.
Sounds the horn several times then reverts to more of a strangled noise.
Is this my power sounder on the way out ?
If the power sounder is removed does the alarm still function ?

Thanks.

Probably - also check bonnet switch making ok.

Alarm still works when power sounder disconnected.

I would check as mentioned above.   Alarm still works ok with power sounder removed as it also has a horn, which still sounds.  However, obviously the power sounder has the built in back up battery for if the main power supply is interupted, so removal will mean no back up alarm, unless you replace it.

I did'nt think it was worth shelling £60 out for the privalige though.  Mines been fine since removing, but I would make sure you wrap the connector block up well with insullation tape if you do remove. :y

Have you ever heard 4 little "chirps" when switching off ??? This is usually a sign that the power sounder is failing .. I believe it is an indication of low voltage of the powersounder batteries. If they drop too low they set the alarm off spuriously. If they fail completely and leak "goo" inside the casing they can cause a short from the permanently "live" feed from the car battery that then leads to a fire .. :(

OK ..... it's rare but it has happened, so don't mess with failing power sounders is my opinion .. as soon as I got the 4 "chirps" more than a couple of times the Powersounder was removed for safety.

Thanks all.
I've removed the power sounder & at the moment the alarm hasn't gone off again.
I was expecting the sounder to start up when I disconected the wiring but it didn't give a chirp, I assume that means the batteries in it are flat?
