Title: Exhaust manifold studs

Hi

Please could someone tell me the length, and thread size, for exhaust manifold studs on V6.

Going to get some locally, VX are waaaay to dear...

reuse the old ones bud ! if you need a couple have a few spares  :y

I'd rather use new mate. I don't intend on taking this engine apart in a whle, once it's done  :y

What about ordering & buying just 1 from Vauxhall, then you can go into your local engineer's merchant and ask for X of these please!  :y  :y

I've never looked at mine, but isn't it possible to remove one from the car using 2 nuts locked together?  :-/

I'd be worried about shearing them whilst trying to remove them. AFAIK most folks have them shear rather than "unwind" :(

Worst case, I can re-thread (helicoil) them - would rather they came out whole, though!

In my opinion, reusing the old studs is kind of a risky business, the studs have most certainly become crusty and weak due to being exposed to hot&cold for a long time, and lost the mechanical properties it once had.
However, soaking the studs with plenty of thin penetrating liquid like the classic CRC 5-56 would make your task a whole lot easier. Apply a few days ahead of removal, and re-apply the following day, and just before starting working on it.
The studs for my x20xev was £1 a piece, but I guess we all can afford that 8-)

Why not try locking two nuts together on, say, the most accessible of the studs. Then, before attempting to remove this stud, get the engine up to normal temperature, and then try unwinding it.
Got to be worth a try ........

I would have to measure one but, that wont be tonight as I am playing trains, cranes and rotten landrovers this pm!

M6 rings a bell.

I have not had a stud snap on a V6 yet.....and I have done a few and removed many!

I have M8 in my head - I saw an M8 bolt in wilko today (while getting white spirit ::) ) and it looked about the same thickness...


Will see if I can find an old one in my tool box tonight. Now you mention it, I have 2 3.0 heads knocking about - just wonder if any of them has a stud in... :y

the manifold bolts are m8 but i'm not sure of the size

you may do best just dropping one out and checking that way :y

If you have heads can't you measure the hole?

If you have heads can't you measure the hole?

that's what i was thinking ::)

get a vernier calliper in there M6 will be approx 5mm ID and M8 will be approx 7 ;)
