Title: ICV or not. That is the question :-)
Post by: johnh001 on 26 April 2009, 23:34:13
Hi again all,

Finaly got the mig through its MOT and now all sorted and road legal  8-)

Still have a few issues which are really bugging me.

Main one is the rough and irratic idle. Sometimes its great and idles at about 600rpm and ticks over nicely. other times it hunts up and down between 1200 and 1800rpm. Sometimes its just rough at 900rpm.

Now I have already cleaned out the ICV along with the throttle body and also the little breather valve tucked inside the inlet manifold ( that all stopped the stalling )

Now is it that the ICV is pooped and needs a new one or is there anything else to check that might be causing this issue before I lay out any more hard earned beer tokens on it?

2nd issue is the gear change. Autobox is quite jerky / notchy when changing down. All seems ok on the way up just when slowing down or comming to a stop. Is this normal?

Any help or advice would be appreciated  :)

i would say not icv, in my experience if it plays up the car stalls. Cleaning sorts it. But never say never as they say. Usually hunting and revs rising is an air leak post maf and could be anywhere up to the inlet manifold. But start with the obvious like jubiled clips on the inlet trunking/bagpipes. Icv rubber seal to plenum is a good place to look, make sure its seated well and sealed. Vac pipes also possible. Make sure plenum is seated correctly on its pegs and seals. Breathers seated correctly.
When did you first notice the hunting problem?

auto box check atf level and top up if need be guide in maintenance. Or change the atf altogether.

Thanks for the notes,

Yes its a 4 pot but will have a good look about and see if anything is not quite right.

I noticed the hunting once when on the way back from the 1st MOT. If it wasnt stalling then it would hunt between 1200 and 1800rpm. I was hoping that the clean up would have sorted it and it seemed to for a day or so. But that didnt last long lol

It does sound like an air leak, or maybe sticky ICV.

There is a white vac pipe that goes round the back on the engine - check this hasn't come adrift at either end.

Did you use new gaskets for ICV and TB? worth trying if not.

Well I decided to start again as used a gasket compound and the old gaskets when refitting last time. Stripped it down, Cleaned everything again, Fitted new ICV ( cant be arsed keep cleaning this one  ;D )

I will have to wait till tomorrow till the new TB gasket arrives but will keep you posted.

Decided to finish cleaning all the breathers at the same time. I had not attempted the big one at the back. What a Biatch to get to the bolts that hold the metal pipe on  >:(. Need arms like Baboons me thinks. Not too sure how on earth Im going to get the bolts back in as yet  ;D

Roll on tomorrow  :D
