Title: top mounts

hi all i am systematically working my way thru the front suspension trying to cure the handling probs and i must say i am doing very well so far.the car is much much better than it was.one mistake i have made tho is when changing the front struts i did not change the top mounts.i have been told that this can contribute to steering/suspension problems on an omega.my question is do i need to change the whole mount or just the bearing inside?what sort of price are these and are they stealers only.thanks

So what have you changed so far?

A full geometric set-up makes a huge difference.  :y
You can change everything, but if the camber is out you'll still have handling issues.

arms,springs,shocks,steering arms,roll bar links and tyres.it has been a ongoing project that iv nearly won but i love this car so what the heck.

After changing all that you deffo need to get the geo set up as the camber is adjusted with the lower shock mounts.

ok sounds like good advice so a trip to get the geo set up is looming but what about the top mounts?i would rather change these first before getting the geo done.

You can check the top bearings by getting someone to swing the wheel from lock - lock and also over a few degrees either side of centre.
You feel the top of the spring, rotation here should be smooth, any sign of jerkiness suggests rust or broken balls in the bearings. (Wheel must be on ground)

You can replace just the bearing balls (4mm iirc but can check if you PM me) but the bearing races can be pitted or ridged so its best to fit new bearings complete. They are available separately from the top mount.
If there is any sign of the top mount turning in the bodywork due to a siezed / jammed bearing then you should replace the mount also.

changing the top mount is always good as they deform badly over time and allow a lot of movement from strut to body, the difference between a new one and a worn one heightwise can be as much as 8mm!!!
as they come in a kit with the bearings already in would suggest doing it!!

    The last time i bought these they were about £9 + vat and that was a few years ago.

  Also when i took off the top mounts they were badly distorted as other people have mentioned so may well be worth doing while your at it :).
