Title: help!!please after some advice about getting a mig
Post by: craig on 29 April 2009, 17:52:20
Looking for advice please
been offered a fully specced elite 3.0 for £450
149,000 miles but a shed load of history
car runs like a dream and for a car thats not been ran for 3 weeks started with no fuss taps or knocks and revs sweet with no smoke or steam
my concern is under oil car and on filler next its thick of mayo
i know vauxhalls suffer with mayo in the cap due to short runs etc but i am concerned
any way i can tell if its going to need a gasket
does not seem to pressure up but i only left it ticking over 15 minutes or so

Thanks in advance
Craig

mayo in filler is fine, as long as there's none on dipstick...

If the mayo build up is quite heavy you will need to clean it off and clean the breathers and  breather box as they will be the same as the filler neck, but your main question was with ref to the head gaskets being shot, no they are not and failure is quite rare. change the oil and filter and take the car on a good splat along the motorway and all will be good. Do yu know when the cam belt kit was changed as that wil be a consideration as to whether you buy it or not. Vx oil is gen regarded as being the best oil to use and does seem to resist the mayo build up better than more expensive oils.

v6 gaskets tend to be pretty strong mate.
have a look in the header tank and see what the waters like and also  if there is any slime round the neck.
if is clean ish  then you should be ok  :y

149000 is nothing for these engines if its been looked after  :y
has the cam belt been done ?
if not do it  :y

keep the breather clean, give it plenty of oil changes and the engine should out last the rest of the car  :y

they can be a bit heavy on the front wishbones but they are pretty easy to do  :y

plenty of lads on here with spanners are willing to help  :y

auto or manual ?

i bought an MV6 for £200 intending to engine swap my V6 Veccy in the end i decided the omega is a far better car in everyway and kept the omega and broke the veccy up

headgaskets are very strong oil coolers can play up but thats also a vec b v6 problem

also using the omega's inlet manifold removes the huge vectra v6 flat spot so i would try and use that if you can figure out how to ive seen it done on a courtenay v6 conversion at PVS so its possible!

Keep the Omega MUCH better car and a lot better handling.

As to Vectra get a spare head off one of the breakers here.

Does the car run ok,and what condition is it in overall,oh and what reg is it.I will try and get some pics later.Just in the process of having front and rear bumpers repainted, all rubbed down ready and prepared,so these will be done pretty soon.
