Title: GM exhaust
Post by: amba on 01 May 2009, 08:29:38
Is it worth buying genuine GM exhaust parts as I need the mid section ,and whilst doing it I am probably going to replce both L/H and R/H just to be sure.
Am certain down pipes to cats are ok,and the rear box is a Remus chromed unit so that is also fine.I am getting a constant drone at speeds between 30-70 and worse when lifting off throttle,so suspect baffles are on way out,but can,t compalin as it looks like the original units are still there 10 years on.
I have read numerous reports on GM bits now being poor quality so unsure what is the best way to go with this.

Some GM ones have been "motor factor" quality recently so personally I wouldn't (and didn't) pay the premium.

I, like others, got a complete system from eternalcar.com for about 120 quid delivered inc vat and fitting kits (clamps, rubber hangers, belts, etc.). They sell the bits individually so you can buy centre sections for about 30 odd quid IIRC. Maybe a little more now the pound has devalued as they come from Germany.

It's not quite as refined as the OEM system but a darn sight cheaper and better than anything I've ever seen from a fast fit outlet.

Fitting wasn't bad at all. IIRC Ians did have to trim a little off one of his centre sections to get it to fit though.

I would say if you're tempted to go genuine, have a look at what you're buying before you part with any cash!

I should say that for anyone with a replacement back box without chrome trims I got some rather nice slash cut chrome trims from Lidl in Basingstoke at the weekend. 6 quid a go IIRC.

My Eternal exhaust was visually similar to Chrisgixer's in the link but without any kind of trim on the tailpipes. Hence the Lidl purchase.

One of my centre sections looked exactly like his original one, the other looked like the plain oval silencer on his new exhaust. :-/

Having heard Chris' system I think mine is slightly louder.

Thanks for "heads up" guys.As it just seems to be droning from center sections will take your advise and have a look at Eternal systems .
