Title: strange sound from the engine
Post by: mathewst on 01 May 2009, 11:47:42
I replaced a cambelt kit two months ago and now something strange is happening.
There is a strange sound coming from the engine, it's not very loud but it sure doesn't feel alright. My best guess is the water pump but I'm not sure about this. And the largest wheel on which the cambelt sits look like it's moving a little shaky,(its rotating and shaking a little).  The onboard display doesn't report any error except the coolant level low but this isn't new, the sensor probably went bad a long time ago.
Also there sometimes is a another strange sound that last for a few seconds and it sounds like when you put a plastic on a alloy of a kids bike and drive it slowly. rol facelift)?
Did this happened to anyone?
Is there any way to check this with a paper clip(the car is 2.2 pet
Can I drive the car in a state like this?
Anyone who has any idea please help.

And another thing I'm not sure is it related but better to write it.
When the cambelt kit was changed, the clutch was also changed.

Are you sure you mean cambelt and not the aux belt?

You can see the aux belt without removing anything.

Where is the 'largest wheel' you mention? Is it right at the bottom in the middle? If so that's the crankshaft pulley and you certainly don't want anything going wobbly on that!

The biggest belt you can see( actually the only one with the small canals inside it from the inner side).

Have you got a picture of what you mean?

Great now the shi... has happened. Drove slowly and there bas a bang and the car turned off, the water started leaking from somewhere behind the belt. it threw the plastic covering the front side of the engine towards a little and it was pressed at the belt ( the one with canals, dont know the exact word). Someone said that it could be the belt tensioner that broke but that was changed two months ago (at least thet charged me for it). Or it is maybe the water pump. Some guy even mentioned the thermostat.
Does anyone have any idea????

if you can get a picture up for us it would be a great help.

It could be anything from a failed auxbelt to a failed water pump taking the cambelt out and causing lots of damage

if you can post a few pics you'll get lots more help

The outer belt is stil on ( the big one with canals). Can't see the one under the plastic which was supposedly changed two months ago. How big a damage if the water pump broke?
Will have some pics by monday because i  left the car in service today

The water pump is least of the problems. It sounds like the cambelt (the one you can't see under the cover) has snapped. This can happen if the tensioner is faulty or not tensioned correctly. The belt is loose and cams slip, then valves get damaged and pistons move when they shouldn't; generally things break and cost a lot to put right.

You're not going to know without removing the cam belt cover and having a look inside.

That's the aux belt and it has been rubbing on the cam belt case. It's possible something has broken inside the cam belt case and pushed the case out and is causing the rubbing against the aux belt. You really need to do a bit more investigation to see the state of the cam belt and other bits.

I know that is the aux belt but if you look more closely you'll see a black plastic part sticking on the left side above aux belt-
Got any idea what that is?

Yes I can see it in the last picture. It look like part of the bearing assembly for the tensioner. If you look carefully you can see the marking 'SKF' on it. SKF make the tensioner in some cam belt kits so I'm quite sure it's the tensioner that has failed, making the cam belt slack resulting in no grip on the cam sprocket wheels, therefore playing merry hell with cams and pistons.

Thing is, this is a 2.2 so the waterpump is cambelt driven.

What can happen is the cambelt etc gets changed but not the water pump, the waterpump then starts to seize up and the tensioners can't take the increased strain and the inevitable happens.

The only real answer to this one is to remove the aux belt and cambelt cover and see what you find.

Like I said the water pump is the least of the problems.

I'm now certain this is cam belt failure caused by a failure of the tensioner. Not good.

edit: I see you pressed the submit button too early!

Anyway, yes, the cover has to come off.

Thanks guys especcialy Bumbazor.
Hope someone else who knows about this stuf will also state their opinion on waterpump tensioner issue.
Guess there will be a huge argument on monday in the repair shop
