Title: Write off or replace engine???
Post by: Woodfull on 04 May 2009, 18:48:29
Hi all,

Would appreciate some advice from my fellow forum members regarding my tale of woe that I recently mentioned on page two of this thread:

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1239267366/19#19

I've now recovered the car to my home address and am in a quandry what to do next!!!

Do I:

1.   Scrap the car
2.   Break it, not withstanding that I don't really have the time to remove and post the parts or the experience having never done it before.
3.   Replace the engine, but option 2 applies, oh and I'm not keen to spend any more of my hard earned cash :(

I'm reasonably adept at spannering but probably don't have all the tools, and don't have any garage space.

What really hacks me off is the costs Ive incurred this year, including new tyres and stereo :'( :'( >:( >:(

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. :y :y

Having read your woes it seems to me that as you have a receipt (presumably) for a cambelt and tensioner change only 20k ago at a Vauxhall dealer...I believe (maybe wrongly) that they may well be liable to fix your engine at their cost as they are guaranteed for 40k or 4 years if the engine damage is found to be as a result of a cambelt tensioner failure...certainly worth a go :y

Of course if its the aux belt tensioner thats failed and you have been unfortunate enough to have the belt catch in the cambelt causing the failure then I guess there is nothing much that you can do...

If you're not in a rush to get it back on the road, I'd look for another enging to put in it & leave the gas off it - you'll get your boot back too! :y

Cam belt was done 18 months ago, if........the 4 years /40k thing applies it's definitely worth a crack,  I can guess the stealers approach though  >:( >:(

the dealer would only waranty the work for 12 months i guess :-/

but like you say if the tensioner has failed prematurely then it clearly is not fit for purpose and you could well have a case.

go give the dealer some stick :y

Should be considered premature tensioner failure and as you had it done by a dealer I would take this as your first route...Vaux customer services next...Vaux recommended replacement for cambelt/tensioners is 4yrs or 40k so 20k is very premature...

Tell me about it...........and I thought taking it to the stealers would give me some sort of guarantee :-[ :-[

Thanks for the advice :y

I agree with Mutant - go back to dealer and ask them to sort out with VX - if they do not /will not then you will have to contact Customer Service yourself. I have got things through out of warranty in the past. Dealer screwed up my engine last year and VX Luton replaced it - but that was tensioner bolt failure allegedly and it went only 4 miles from garage after belt replacement so not difficult to attributer blame.

As yours is a recent vehicle has to be worth investigating engine options in case VX appraoch fails.
