Title: please help !!!!!
Post by: jane on 05 May 2009, 15:21:30
i have just bought a 2L auto Omega, but 2 weeks into my ownership of it, it's all going wrong!!!  Firstly and most major- it keeps overheating! we've changed the thermostat, bled the system & made sure there wasnt any air locks, any sugestons? secondly the temperature guage doesnt work! which doesnt help with the first problem! found the wire for the switch but cant find where it connects to?! the last BIG problem i have is the gears! it doesnt seem to change gear when its supposed to, i thought it was low on fluid but dont know how to go about topping it up, as i cant find anywhere to fill it!!!!
i would be REALLY grateful for  any light that could be shed on these problems

Hi Jane and welcome :y

Are the fans coming on at all?
Given the temp guage is not working, what causes you to say its overheating?

I think there is a maintenance guide for chekcing the level of the box fluid (Look in the Maintenance Guide section of the forum), which is the same process as topping up, but you may be better off doing a complete fluid change.  I don't think there is a guide as such but plenty of posts about it. Its also covered in Haynes which I suggest you get if not already.

Cheers
Ian

hi there and thanks for your reply,
the fan works - loudly but ok i think, it comes on alot. the engine starts to really smell and you can feel its far too hot. Probably in hind sight the temperature guage was probably disconnected on purpose, but i cant work out where to connect it back up to ?

Hmm not sure about the CTS wire - its a while since I had a 2L.
I think we need to figure out if its really overheating.  It IS normal for the fan to come on eg in traffic.   If your car has AC there will also be a fan (2?) in front of the rad anfd these should be on full time if AC is switched on.   When the fan comes on does it then cycle on and off every couple of minutes?

The 'hot' smell could be leaking camcover seals - the hot oil being burnt off the manifold can give the impression of overheating.  Try removing a plug lead and see if its imersed in oil.

the fan does go on and off regular, sometimes staying on longer than other times- but its on for most of the time we are travelling! even on 2-3 mile journeys!!
funny you should mention takng a plug out....... we did that this morning and found oil in the plug wells!! we've now replaced that gasket and fixed that problem (i hope???) would that of caused the engine to overheat? on our way back from the garage the fan took alittle longer than usual to kick in but was still as bad as before!!

No, but it would lead to hot smelly fumes that could easily give that impression.

Its well worth doing the breather/throttle body/ICV clean that is described in the maintenance guides section on here - that is the cause of your camcover seal going, and will also make the car run much much better.

Hopefully someone can advise on that coolant temp sensor wire.  Which end is not connected?

On the 2.2 Engine, it's at the back of the engine just below the scuttle if thats any help, just to one side of the EGR valve.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, but I'm sure you won't find it, as I don't think the 2.2 is fitted with one!  ;D  ;D  ;D

The sensor terminal looks more like a round stud/drawing pin, and the spade terminal on the wire slides onto the terminal.

LOL mis-read who had what!  ;D Somewhere within reach of the wire you've found!  ;) Mine's got a full compliment of cylinders!  ;)   ;) ;D  ;D
As Ian says temp sensor lives at the back of the block somewhere.

the scuttle is the black plastic cover that the wiper spindles go through.

The EGR on the 2L is to the rear of the camcover.   In my recollection there is a white vac pipe going to it (I remember because mine broke off..)

It should sit around the centre of the gauge, any higher and into the red it's overheating :y

Title: Re: please help !!!!!
Post by: ians on 06 May 2009, 17:47:17
that could be toasted plug leads as a result of your camcover leak.

Have you changed plugs/air/fuel filter recently?  If not , its worth doing these basics first just to eliminate them.
Title: Re: please help !!!!!

Jane...as said...if you have changed the cam cover definitely definitely get the breather system cleaned out or the gasket will fail again very prematurely...should be cleaned out at least once a year :y

Clean spark plugs up see how that goes, better still replace them...if leads cracked or worn change them...long term misfiring will take out the dispack which is more costly
Title: Re: please help !!!!!
Post by: jane on 06 May 2009, 18:55:17
er.... whats a dispack?
do they sell jargon boooks for cars? lol - maybe lessons?? :o
Title: Re: please help !!!!!
Post by: ffcgary1 on 06 May 2009, 21:05:39
Dis pac is the electronic box that sits behind the pass side cylinder head and is a pain to get to. The plug leads are connected to the dis pac, similar to the distributor on older cars.

Hope that helps. :y

OOPS, just seen that you have a 4 pot motor but the dis is the same but located in a diff position
