Title: Chipping my 3ltr MV6
Post by: Dave Hunter on 06 May 2009, 15:59:42
I was thinking of chipping the MV6 - but dont really know much about it.  I dont want to introduce any reliabillity problems, overheating, naff fuel consumption etc.  Im also concerned that I may gain power at higher revs to the detriment of low down torque.

So will I notice a difference, do I have anything to worry about and what is the best chip to go for?  I saw this one on ebay, any good?

Chipping just will not do anything else than lower your mpg. Please see relevant discussions here... not really much possibilities in tuning the 3,0/3,2 engines. On 2,5/2,6 you can achieve something by putting 3,0 cams on, but chipping, air-boxes etc just simply don't work: Omega standard setup is quite good...

I beg to differ.

3.0V6 can be chipped and noticable improvments.

Mtek chip is used by quite a few memebers here.

MPG is up, when driven sensibly.

More power when driven hard, on high revs.

Jimbob, Hotel21, and loads of others have had theirs chipped for noticable improvments  :y

Ok, I'm sorry if I'm wrong, but to convince me you'll have to put up some real data/figures of the improvement. The most common "seat-feel" is just not enough  ;) If anyone has any printed data of the change before/after chipping I'm happy to read and then I think I can accept the fact that these lumps can also be chipped but until that I must remain my opinion  :)  :-X :y :-/

I don't have one so can't, i know members here have done the manual method.

Using a tank of fuel, reseting trip, and filling up again.

Chip will improve mpg, makes a huge difference on the TD's as BMW de-tuned them for Vx. Less improvment on V6, but still there.

I tried Superchip and currently running a Courtaney chip in my MV6 3.0 Manual, the latter seems slightly more responsive and does give better MPG.

If I criuse it on motorway at 77, it returns arround 38 MPG, wouldn't go over 34 MPG with the original chip.  :y

yes it makes a difference and the 3.2/3.0 can be tuned just like the 2.5/2.6

the eBay one is fine its under the bonnet of my MV6 works perfectly works exactly the same as a collins "Powerchips" that cost £250!

MPG is improved if you drive sensibly!

Brilliant, thanks for the responses chaps - I found another thread on here that was also very useful so I think Im a bit better clued up.  Aside from the ebay one I cant find any for sale though - do you have a link to Mtek or Courtaney?

Cheers,
Dave

you cant chip 2.6...

but apparently post 98 3.0's and 2.5's ecu's are the same, so the different cams shouldnt need taking into account.

Ah ha that is interesting! ::)
So when I have put my 3.0 cams in, the ECU will do any adjustments automatically?

2.6/3.2 have to be Flashed ie Angeltuning

if you cant find a chip for a 2.6 then look for companies offering it for the Facelift Vectra GSi as it has the Y26SE in it

Courtenay now use Superchip (they do 2.6 and 3.2):

or http://www.superchips.co.uk/

M-tek if its the one I think you mean:
