Very likely but check they don't have a balast pack (small metal box with wires) screwed to the underside, that would make them HID's.

whats the difference between the two and is the box attached to the lights or the car

Post by: unlucky alf on 01 May 2009, 21:54:36
the HID lights would mean a bit of wiring & a headlamp wash system fitting, projectors go straight on but check the adjusters as they are prone to breaking :y

If they are on anything but an elite or MV6 then they will more than likely be projector :y Ballast pack is attached to the underside of the headlight, small metal box about 4 inches square :y

The main difference is that one uses normal halogen bulbs (projector type only) and the other one uses a much different type of bulb - HID (high intensity discharge) lamps which uses that small metal box that Weling and MutantCav said. HIDs are better than the normal projector type. Check out the following for a better idea:

EDIT - I meant WelUng

Post by: unlucky alf on 01 May 2009, 22:13:26
they will fit mate but like i said make sure there is no rattles in them if you give them a shake, adjusters a known problem :y
Title: Re: projector headlights
Post by: kjf7 on 01 May 2009, 22:31:17
can adjusters be fixed as did notice passanger one moves around inside and makes sound
Title: Re: projector headlights
Post by: unlucky alf on 01 May 2009, 22:35:17
they can be fixed but its a bit of a job, plus you will need another adjuster which you cant buy, i used one out of the old style lights & had to make it longer, if your lucky its a clean break so might be able to epoxy it.

Title: Re: projector headlights
Post by: MutantCav on 01 May 2009, 22:55:47
Very worth it...bite his hand off mate whether they rattle or not :y

Post by: kjf7 on 01 May 2009, 23:13:18
i can see what i think is the bloody break now opporsite end to indicator and near top end of threads on adjuster
Title: Re: projector headlights
Post by: MutantCav on 01 May 2009, 23:19:49
The end near the indicator will probably just need pushing back into place...the other end will be a broken adjuster...

Title: Re: projector headlights
Post by: kjf7 on 01 May 2009, 23:43:44
it seems the other light has come loose now cant see a break just part of slider moving do the threads go on these plastic bar stood s
Title: Re: projector headlights
Post by: unlucky alf on 01 May 2009, 23:52:42
it self distructs mate, more often than not if you try & glue it itll be so brittle anyway the threaded bit on the end might shatter. :'( perhaps mutant cav might help if you are near him.

Post by: kjf7 on 03 May 2009, 14:51:11
hi got the light apart glued adjuster now need to put back together is it the reverse or is there some better way to seal lights or is it a case of heating with hair drier and pushing back together :y
Title: Re: projector headlights
Post by: kjf7 on 04 May 2009, 15:56:54
that was a waste of time broken already luck hav'nt fitted is there a better glue used araldite last time? the adjusters arn't supported enought when in position inside the light only just reach the part they slide into
Title: Re: projector headlights
Post by: unlucky alf on 04 May 2009, 16:14:26
this is what most people have found that the plastic doesnt glue very well on the adjusters, i ended up using old style adjusters but had to extend them as they are shorter, doesnt look pretty but does the job & you dont see them anyway, as for re-sealing the lense you could use gutter sealer or just use a clear silicone sealer, but the silcone stuff will be a pig if you want to get them apart again :y
Title: Re: projector headlights

what about the adjusters from the old lights although hav'nt taken the lights off yet so dont know if they look anything like projectors

that is exactly what i did - take 2 broken projectors and fit the old style adjusters from your current lights.

As Alf said they don't quite fit right and won't look pretty but it DOES work (i know ;))

The old adjusters are too short and won't reach the sliders but still long enough to reach thread so will work. :y

maybe thats what have already been fitted to these projectors they only just touch the sides of the slider bit they run into adjusters are about 1.25 inches long without ball joint what do you think

unlikely that old style adjusters would fracture as they are no where near as brittle as the new style :-/

what happened to MDTM making adjusters in extruded aluminium? :-?

i'll have a pair of those! how long are old style adjusters then

the projector adjusters are black & the old style are white, to make the old style fit you have to extend them or youll be plane spotting ;D, what i did was to join 2 of the nylon inserts together [the bit that clips to reflector & pops onto the adjuster},the way i done it is awkward to explain but easy to do & works fine.

no idea as they're on my car ;D (about 20mm shorter than the new ones i think)

i did toy with the idea of getting a local machine shop to mill me a pair of new ones as wouldn't be to difficult, ended up bodging with old ones though (a bodge that has been on my car for 12 months and 1 MOT mind)

i didn't bother, they still reached the thread but didn't reach the slider, was a bit concerned when i was setting then up (worried that the adjuster would fall off the end of the thread :-[)

but all worked fine - got the headlights checked at my local MOT station - and passed MOT 6 months later ;)

to be honest with you they are still not brilliant considering the performance of the rest of the car

but they are sooooo much better than the old lights :y

big lumps removed then give it a good hairdrying to warm it up before fit the 2 parts back together.

then reseal with a bit of bathroom sealant ;) before fitting rubber gasket over the top :y

had a chance today to try and sort these buggers out, ended up making some adjusters and all was fine until i lightly dusted a finger print from reflector and the shiny surface popped off aswell which i knew would happen but was soooo careful! anyway at least i can make an adjuster now and even thinking about going into production! soon as i found out the threads were 3/16 i remembered i had a tap in that size and away we go. Not fitting the bloody things now so would be nice if they went to a good home cheers for all the help :y
