Press your finger onto the end of the cap head bolt & you'll get an impression of the size you need on the end of your finger!!!! :y :y :y

All I can say is that on mine the inside of the integral hexagon 'nut' of the lid takes the 1/2" drive shaft of a socket set. The outside hexagon 'integral nut of the lid itself is an awkward 21.5mm if I remember correctly ;) ;)

star_whites means how the base that the canister you describe is fastened to the block. ;) :y

It's no good multi-tasking if you get it wrong though! We men do one thing at a time .... but get it right 1st time! ::) ::) ::) ::) :y :y ;D

lol now now :D
Yes I meant just the main housing. The cannister lid comes off quite easy as I had the pleasure of getting that freed a number of weeks back so that bits easy.
Ive been under again and have ended up giving in for the day. Its definatly a allen bolt and I know its larger than a 10mm and smaller than a 17mm as there the two largest I have and as the car is off the road there was no chance of nipping down to Halfords either. Will pick up some new sockets through the week ready for next weekend.
The nice easy job is turning into an epic ;D

Modify it to take the cannister type mate. Undo using a chain wrench or just bang a screwdriver thro and turn ;) Much easier.
-
I dont mind the paper filters as they are easier to monitor the condition of them. I just need to remove it to get to the oil cooler pipe unions so I can change them. ::)

That wasn't what he was struggling with though. ;) I really can't see the point of 'modifying' the canister type for the old throw away type cartridge. :-?
Each to their own though. :y

You either need:
* a 27mm socket
* a 12mm male alan key bit
-
You either need
A) a 27mm socket
B) a 12mm male alan key bit
-
......
B) a 12mm male alan key bit
Is there any other kind? ;) ;) ;) ;) :y

I guess not - else it would be a socket, wouldn't it ;D

Thanks James, just found that out via a pm as well. Off to tool shop during the week then ::)

I had the same question recently.
Almost certainly 12mm Allen as James has said.
I found one at Halfords. It was attachment for a socket set wrench, only a few quid and made the job easy - cos mine was on very tight!!! :y
