Title: Clattery sound from Z22XE (2.2)
Post by: joshwyatt on 11 May 2009, 18:24:07
Hello all,
I've notcied that from the right hand side of the engine block to the exhaust manifold there is a clattery sort of sound, not that loud but enough that it concerns me. It's there when the engine is both cold and at operating temperature. I know without hearing it for yourself it may be difficult to diagnose, but any ideas? Engine is Omega 2.2 z22xe 2002 model manual, and only covered 34,000 miles.
And also a bit cheeky I know, but if anyone is near would they mind having a look? More than happy to pay for your time and petrol etc. I'm located in Kidlington, 4 miles from Oxford city centre. Or happy to travel to you instead.

I'm not too savi with it either lol, as far as I can tell nothing is loose and have had the best look I can. I try and learn as much as possible from here, but when it comes to diagnosing things like this I must admit I have no idea at all. I think it may be coming from within the engine or heatshield/manifold bit.

Would anyone think it could be something like hydraulic lifters, cylinders or similiar? Apologise if that's the wrong term to use. Not trying to seem impatient. But am a little hesitant about driving if something from within the engine is making this noise, albeit it fairly quietly.

Have a go at getting the heatshield off the exhaust manifold, and then look for broken studs.  I had this and it was the front lower stud bust (right next to the thermostat housing), leading to gasket failure and a 'orrible clattery noise.

I'll PM you my mobile number as I drive close to Kidlington every day, but Tunnie or James would be better bets.

Rule out the heat sheild first, does the noise have a tin like sound or is it a deep noise, like a metal to metal grind?

.....watch if you do it hot but,

Grabbed the shiny chrome looking sheild above the exhaust manifold and give it a good tug,up and down, side to side etc to see if you can replicate the noise you are getting.....if it is that then nothing serious to worry about :y
Remember also that noise travels and it could be something thats not in the position you think it is....check everything round about for security...could just be something thats loose

Thanks tunnie and Abiton for your kind offers.
Tunnie, would you mind having a quick look/listen? Getting to Bicester station is no problem at all for me. Any ideas or imput you give would be greatly received.
Abiton, thanks for your PM, and again I reeeeeeally appreciate the offer. Most kind of you. I'll see what tunnie says first if he's able to as he's got a 2.2 aswell.
This just shows you that there are people with hearts of gold out there.
Once again many thanks.

Iain, it seems to be more of a tin like noise. It appears to be in time with the cylinders going up and down or mechanical parts like that moving. As far as I can tell I can't see anything that's lose or moving around. I tried the exhaust manifold and can't manage to replicate the noise either.

I usually get back around 7:20/30 if i get my usual train, as long as i don't have to stay late for work. Drop me a PM with your mobile and lets see what we can do  :y

All resolved now with all the credit going to tunnie. In the end turned out to be nothing to worry about...just how the engine is. Listening to his engine, sounded similiar so nothing to worry about. Tunnie also looked at anything else i.e. climate control, exhaust, door check strap, breather pipes. And even gave me some of the washer things to cure the cracking sound of the door. Top bloke!!!! Lovely to have met you :)

No worries  :y

All normal sounds from a 2.2, get that aircon re-gassed and see if it gets the compressor kicking in.

I am pritty sure the compressor won't engage if the pressure is too low.

Check door strap is nice and easy, will get rid of that sound.
