Title: running like a bag of shite on LPG
Post by: Robski on 14 May 2009, 19:05:41
cars been running fine on petrol but awful on LPG,took it back to LPG installer yesterday and left it with him,I have rang him at 5:15 today to see what is happening and he told me he had changed the themostat and it is now running fine.Apparently from what he told me the thermostat was not working properly which was affecting the vapouriser.I have since spoke to Loo-knee or whatever other name hes now known by and we are a bit suspicious of what the gas installer is saying,so would like to know if this guys just filling me with shit, anyone with knowledge of LPG please :y :y :y

When a thermostat fails, it fails open which means your car will run cold which will affect the LPG. Did the car get up to temp OK.

To be honest, if the vaporisor is plumbed in properly (directly from back of coolant bridge, with return to HBV) - then a stat wouldn't make any difference to the temp of the coolant in the block....

Not sure how old your installation is  mate but mine was running on what felt like 3 cylinders and turned out to be simply blocked filters.

Heres hoping!

To be honest James I have not noticed any pipe work going to the HBV other than the ones that should  :-?

Sounds like insufficient coolant feed may be the issue then.

Is this something the gas fitter should have done?
Could it be that he has found the problem to be say his wiring and blaming the thermostat?
I would want to see your old thermostat Rob when you go to pick your car up. Even ask where it is and how he removed it..

Could be he's found the coolant flow to be too low and corrected it... I agree though, ask for the old stat and a few gentle questions.

LK - in my experience, the best coolant feed for LPG evaporators, is to run a pipe from the coolant bridge, to the evap - and from the evap, back to the HBV. This always has a hot feed, being before the HBV - and isn't affected by cabin controls.

I guess if the stat is opening too soon then full temp wouldn't be reached - so thinking about it, the theory IS reasonable - but it would be interesting to know how it's plumbed.. :y
