Title: engine noise
Post by: jim351 on 14 May 2009, 17:16:09
Hi all, i have just agreed in principle to buy a 2001/Y 2.6 elite very cheap!  :y  i haven't seen it apart from some photo's but the engine has quite a severe a top end noise from one side, it still runs but he only started it up to show a mate then shut it straight off again, the cam belt hasn't broke but it looks in bad condition, the car has done 86,000 with alot of history, any ideas what it might be? i'm thinking of cam belt jumped a tooth? if a new head is needed what sort of cost are they to buy?

The belt needs to slip 2 or 3 teeth mate to bend valves.
might be worth stripping it doen to actually see if the belt has slipped.
Depends on where you get the heads from on price being honest.

If its just coming from one side it could possibly be a seized / faulty tappet. If so its not teminal, may just need cleaning/unsticking (there is a tappet cleaning guide somewhere in this forum) or replacing.

Also, unless the you have proof of a cambelt change in the history, you may want to do that at the same time ASAP as they are due at 80K. :y

Just had my cam belt and pulleys changed at 40k , seems I had a lucky escape as the pulleys were breaked , grease had escaped at some point in the past and they were in very poor condition. I reckon the last cam belt change they must have used a cheapo pattern kit.

Got a genuine GM one on this time so hopefully it will fare a bit better !

You might be lucky and change the cam belt and pulleys, fix the timing up and it will be fine.
