Title: Breather cleaning
Post by: Entwood on 22 May 2009, 15:09:47
Breather cleaning .... every oil change or not ??

I change the oil/filter every 5000 miles, and, to be honest the stuff coming out looks almost as good as the stuff I'm putting in. I suppose running on LPG helps there.

Breathers were almost spotless, the only one not checked/cleaned is the one down to the breather box as I can't get the damned pipe off.

I was wondering wether to go for a regime of only cleaning the breathers on alternate oil changes ??

Any thoughts ??

I do them annually and they always look OK anyhow, to be honest if you change the oil at decent intervals they tend not to suffer.

I think given the state of your oil when you change it, tbh you would be fine with every 20k/ 2years, but you may want to do annually for peace of mind.

I had this dilema i went to check my breathers after 30k miles of ownership and theyre spotless i change the oil & filter every 4.5k

im on the thinking now that if the cars well maintained then the breathers dont get blocked up? still worth checking every so often though

i always use VX Filters & VX Oil

In my experience, an annual clean-out is perfectly adequate on the petrol jobbies.

And yes, there's no doubt that your LPG use helps too. Different combustion characteristics etc.

I get a length of spare breather hose and blow through each plenum breather port and into the two hoses leading down to the engine block vents just to make sure they are clear every so often.

With regular oil changes and reasonably frequent long journeys they shouldn't block.

I've used a compressor to blow air down the tube in to the breather box at the rear...

Is that ok or not advisable for some reason..

Gotta say after I stop blowing air down..it makes a very strange noise ??
