Should i be able to depress the middle of the steering wheel . not sure that i have even got an airbag ,as i can do so and red warning light on dash :-/ me wonders if previous onwer took the bag out ?
-
Normaly you should not be able to depress the middle, it can be very dangerous if there is one still in there, but it sounds like theres none in.

Red light ?
You need to get the car on a diagnostic
-
yep..diagnostic ..and if any work is planned on airbag battery must be off..
-
red light - i mean seatbelt airbag light
-
You can depress it a little, how far can you press it in?
With mine a centimeter or so.

Middle of mine is REALLY soft..can push in at least 2 cm..nearly 1 inch.
Funny thing..I know she's had a crash at some point prior to me getting her..wonder if the buggers never put another bag in.
Is there a way to tell ?

If deployed, the cover is ripped open by the airbag. There is no mistaking it, you will have an airbag in there. Sounds like your red light is seat belt pre-tensioner, see if there is a yellow plastic strip sticking out of it.

I had opened my airbag a few days earlier(to change the cover),directly behind the cover is the airbag folded.
It is normal that you can press it in for a 1 or 2 cm or so.

Thank you for that....NOT looking for a crash to have it confirmed BUT makes me feel a bit happier...especially as I'll be flying down the Autobahns in a few weeks.
