Title: LPG - a few problems - any advice please
Post by: GuyM on 22 May 2009, 10:07:51
Hi all,
new owner here - done a fair few searches before posting (don't want to be a newbie accused of asking a question thats been asked a million times before!) but not found the answer.

1998 2.0eco with (Tometelli? i think) Polish LPG conversion - single point - fairly basic!

car runs fine in LPG most of the time but have a few questions:

It is a manual switch over, so when is best time to do it - 5 mins after starting, 5 miles running, or when water temp is above 95 - any advice?

Sometimes it stalls when in LPG mode - tickover seems very low. i have cleaned out idle motor, throttle body, breather pipes etc as per Tech Help forum and it idles like a dream on petrol but idles a bit low on LPG.

Sometimes after switching to LPG the engine warning light comes on and stays on (orange with a zig zag through it). No noticeable loss in performance but is this related?

Did the paperclip test and haven't got the codes to hand but think it might be crank sensor and oxygen sensor that were showing - can't remember.

is it worth getting the LPG system serviced - and what exactly can/do they do for an LPG only service - might this help.

Any advice on one or all of the questions much appreciated.

finally have to say just did a 550 mile round trip to Wales mainly on LPG and other than a couple of stalls and the warning light coming on a few times it ran well.

Switch over when the coolant temp is high enough for the vapouriser to work. As soon as guage starts to move, thats more than hot enough.

Redo the paperclip test and post results.

Hi Guy and welcome to the forum :y :y :y :y

It sounds like the LPG system needs a good service and tune up. Because of the nature of the system, relying on rubber diaphragms in the vaporiser, they do go out of tune. Unfortunately, unless you have access to an Exhaust Gas Analyser it's not really a DIY job. The engine management light coming on is probably due to the LPG emissions being out of range for the car ECU.

As above, post up the paperclip results and also, please update your profile with a location as there may be someone nearby who can help :y :y

thanks for the info. i have updated my location in my profile.

i live in watford but work in luton so if anyone knows an LPG place at either of those places it would be appreciated.

also - any idea what i would pay for an LPG service/gas analyser test -is it a 10 min job or an all day service?

I'm not entirely sure how long it takes but I wouldn't have thought much more than an hour or 2 :-/ :-/

Another good source of LPG knowledge is http://www.lpgforum.co.uk although the answers tend to be a bit slower in coming than here :y :y :y

right done the paperclip test again
codes are:

10  1  2  10
1  6  9  10
10  1  3  10
10  5  10  5
10  1  1  10
10  3  4  10

i seem to have loads of them!

what is entailed in fixing the fault for the camshaft sensor?

was wondering if it was worrth getting the lpg up and running smoothly/serviced and if this wouldn't then eliminate some of the codes.

anyway - any help on deciphering the codes and pointing me in the direction of fixing/eliminating them would be much appreciated!
