Title: Spraying Black Bits ?? Any advice ?
Post by: duggs on 22 May 2009, 23:50:09
I have a pre-face lift.  Was thinking of spraying the black trims and underskirts..How hard can it be ?

Any advice please. Can I merely get away with a wash and spray or must I undercoat and everything..

Seen it done a few times, but to be honest it usually looks like a bodge. Autoglym do a plastic restorer that makes tired plastic look like new.  ::)

Penut oil brings black plastic bits and tyres up like brand new too and it only costs £1 in asda down the spices aisle

i spent the entire day once waxing polishing and detailing a Transit van i was very annoyed that the bumpers stayed grey until my collegue told me theyre grey brand new :x

you could use a silicone spray, wd 40 is another, or if you want to take your time try shoe polish :y

Sorry..didn't make myself clear.

Was thinking of spraying black trims and such the same colour as the car as per the facelifts...JUST not sure how to go about it or how it may look. The car is Satin Red.

I would find trim in the colour you need. Too much work to make yours look good if you try and paint them.

Yep , painting them with colour would not be a good idea IMHO, even a Pro would struggle getting a decent finish on plastic!

Stick to the original and your car will look just great!

THATS why this forum is so darn brillient.

Thank you for your advice.  Have shelved the idea based on your comments. She might be old BUT I don't want her to look naff.

Look at an Elite. The sill covers & the lower edge of the front & rear bumper are colour coded, it is possible to paint plastic.

yeah but the thing is the original black trims are a textured finish so getting them smooth would be a job in itself, thats before getting the colour on. :o

My Original rear bumper had been painted - it looked hideous :o and had started to crack and glaze in places  >:(.

Use a plastic restorer, but painting is not worth it in my opinion.

I'm swapping mine for smooth paintable facelift stuff
Much nicer I reckon! :y
