Title: Cam cover oil seals changed ....now what !!
Post by: Missy_MV6 on 24 May 2009, 14:30:48
Hi Guys
I mentioned that we have an oil leak on the MV6 and it's not obvious where it is coming from ,so after reading the forum it sounded like it could be coming from the cam cover..Bought all the bits from Vauxhall,
Printed the "How to" guide off here (which is fab)
My hubby got it in bits and there is no oil leak whatsoever coming from there, the breather pipes are clean, nothing at all is blocked, the plug wells are not full of oil...He has fit new parts and popped new plugs in anyway.
Just worrying that we don't know where the oil is coming from..
Any suggestions :-/

It looks like oil is dripping onto the pan , front passenger side and then our drive slopes downward so when the car is parked the oil drips from the pan onto the floor in that corner. :-?

Leaky oil filter?
Or as said above leaky oil cooler pipes/connections?

Only other thing I can think of is oil filler neck not on properly or dipstick tube?  :-/

Well all the bits are back in the engine and it runs  ;D..He has just done an oil change and the new oil filter had a brass/copper washer that came with it.We were told it goes on the sump.My hubby has fit it but there wasn't one on there to start with :o ..would this cause it to have a small oil leak if the washer was missing ?

Didn't think they had a washer on the sump plug in 99. Pretty sure mine doesn't have one and its a 98.

I could be totally wrong though in which case I need to get one for mine!  :o

The guy at Vauxhall (who is pretty good) knows the age of our car etc and he ordered the parts..the washer was taped onto the side of the oil filter box :)

Have a look here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1167519662. Seems there are two types of sump plug. The old hex one has a washer and the torx one doesn't. Mine is definitely a torx one!  :y

Other things to check are:-

Power steering fluid (from the pump) running down - therefore getting dirty.

Cam Seal - not really a lot of oil but runs down the front of the block behind the rear cambelt cover.

Torx sump plug should have an O-ring fitted!

Check also oil filler O-rings - see http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1243271518
