does the pink vx longlife antifreeze need to be mixed with water
-
in a word ........ yes! 50:50 ratio
-
the barstewards the parts bloke told me it dont need mixing so i just poured it all in , will this affect the cooling
-
How much did you put in mate?
-
hang on!
He could have given you pre-mixed.
Did he give you pure anti-freeze or ready mixed? Was it like water, or a bit thicker?
-
thicker

How much?
-
then next time you see the parts bloke, punch him, dumbass idiot.
Drain it out... flush with water. Get another bottle, mix it 50/50 with water, re-fill.
Guide in maint seciton

i did the cambelt last month and changed the water pump so i put 4-5 liters in
-
So ..... you have 100% pink/red antifreeze in your car?
Drain a gallon/5 litres off and then re-fill with fresh water. that'll give you an aprox 50:50 mix! :y

Before you do that - how much did you put in?????????? Trying to help, plse respond
-
Whole system is 9.7 Lits so if you only put 5 Lits antifreeze in and rest water then you're OK - 50:50 mix.
-
will this mix affect the cooling cos it seemed to heat up v-quickly going over the mountain road to applecross
-
i put in 1 - 5 litre bottle
-
Assumed you have a V6 - and not a 4 pot! Would help if you put car details in your details :-/
Normal running around 95șC with fans cutting in around 97șC.
-
sorry its a 2.2 4 pot
-
Ignore my info - thats for a V6 mate.
-
was it empty to put in 5L? :o
-
id just done a water pump and cambelt

There's only a pint between them (assuming 2.2 is similar to Haynes figures for 2.0) so your info isn't going to be that far out. ;) ;)
-
so i should drain some off ?

Assuming that you already had a 50:50 mix in there to start with you now have a bit to much antifreeze in there. As far as anti-freeze is concerned, more isn't better, you start to lose cooling efficency if thee's to much in. You only needed to put around half the bottle in, so you could drain a couple of pints & top up with fresh water.
Don't lose any sleep though, it won't explode or sieze in the mean time. :y

whats the best way to drain a few pints off

Red drain tap at the bottom of the radiator, passenger side. Slacken it off, it doesn't need to come out completely and it just requires a nip when you close it, swinging off it doesn't make it seal any better. :y :y :y

thanks :)

The maximum heath transfer efficiency of the mixed coolant is at around 2/3 Ethylene Glycol and 1/3 water. Higher EG concentration will see the heath transfer capability of the coolant going down.
This is because pure EG is thicker than water, so while it has better heat transfer properties (and higher boiling point), it will not flow as well as water and the overall effect on engine cooling will be reduced.
So 100% EG does NOT cool the engine better than mixed coolant.
Said that, for various reasons the recommended concentration is (as mentioned by others) 50%-50% which optimises various requirements such as lubrication and corrosion inhibition etc.
