Title: Getting hot then stalling
Post by: Dorset Art on 25 May 2009, 19:18:30
Hi Guys,

Having a couple of problems with my V6 and wondered if anyone can help (I'll try and keep it simple/brief).

Basically since I've owned it the temperature gauge has fluctuated between just below 900 and just above 950, sometimes going up and down in the space of a few minutes driving? Guessing this isn't normal.

Recently, while sitting in traffic the car has started to get quite hot (not going above 100 though); it then wouldn't idle without stalling, to the extent that if I 'coasted' it would stall while traveling.
Turn off, wait a few minutes, then all was fine - seems an intermittent fault as doesn't always happen.
But while waiting few minutes, checked levels, took oil cap off and steam was coming out.

Any ideas would be very welcome, sorry if I haven’t explained too well.

Cheers!!

Try cleaning the Idle air control valve (IACV).

As for the temp, it's noral to go to 95 then the fan cuts in and it drops quick enough, especially while sitting in traffic :y

Thankyou!! I shall get onto that

Just had a thought. While waiting for the car to 'cool', I'm not sure I remember hearing the fan going.
Could it be as simple as the fan not working? Or would this not cause the stalling?

Not unless it was overheating (guage in the red).

Normal running 95ºC - fans should cut in around 97ºC.

Agreed ^^ check/clean ICV mate ;)

Re temp - as said.

My V6 Omegas used to go up-and-down between 85-97, especially when sat in traffic. Quite normal. As long as it does not actually get to 100, this is fine. The stalling is probably NOT related to the temp which is OK.

thankyou!

Really sorry if this has been asked 100 times, but is there a link of how to clean my IACV?
