crank in the safe position (60degrees or whatever).

Then put both cams on one bank to match markings on back plate, then pop in lock. Same for other bank.  Then set crank to tdc, and pop belt on

.. if you've got the pullies off, set cams to the approximate locations shown here when fitting them : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152565319
With crank at a safe position (fit the heads and cams with the crank at 30 degs BTDC No.1).

Tighten down the bearing caps, fit the back plate and the pullies, then turn them to match the timing markings, lock them in place, rotate crank to TDC on no.1 (by rotating clockwise through 30 degs only!) and fit cam belt as normal.

Thanks for the advice - this is the biggest engine rebuild I have ever done - I have rebuilt 4 cylinders and bike engines singles & twins.

And it is hard work!

Followed that - 3 & 4 are OK, 1 & 2 are pointing out rather than in.

Try this

Page says
.o...o................o
1.....2........3.....4
...............o......

I get
o........o.............o
.1.....2........3.....4
...............o......

Is this to be expected?

As long as you're sure you got cams 1 and 2 the right way round (i.e. inlet and exhaust not swapped) I would say it's OK. That guide is just a general aid to getting them roughly right before putting the pullies on. The tension in the valve springs tends to make the cam sit where it wants. ;)

Once you've got the pullies and backplate on, with the crank in a "safe" position, you can get them correctly aligned and lock them.

but it's taken Martin days now not hours!!! ;) ;) ;) :y

When you say the crank at 4 o'clock, I assume you mean TDC is at 4 o'clock :-/ :y

I was still dismantling the inlet at 4 oclock, finished about 6 tonight after a 7:30 start this morning.

IF Bicknells can get an HG by dinner time change, else risk reuse I have decided.

So far

Hard bits

DIsmantling due to loctite and previous bodging

refitting heads

that coolant pipe down side of engine

Actually the cam belt was not difficult

However 3 days solid has taken it out of me a lot now and I am shattered

I wouldn't have thought that a few miles with the gasket the wrong way up would damage it ?? It is designed to take a fair bit more stress than that I would have thought ??

It's not the head gasket that the worry, it's the lack of oil due to the gasket being the wrong way round. :-?  If you look at the eBay picture, the oil hole is at the side of the gasket/head & if the gasket is 4r$e about face it'll block it which ever upside down it is.  ;)
