Hi, My omega has a slight tapping noise. It seems to get worse when the engine is warmer. Ive had an oil change and the manifold has been checked over with a new gasket. After the recent oil change it seems to be abit quieter.
Any ideas what I can do it solve this without spending loads? Engine runs smooth .

Hi,
does it come and go, or is it always present?
-
Did the car ever run out of oil maybe?
-
When I start the car up from cold the engine is quiet. Its when it get warm the tapping noise can be heard. The noise is always there until engine is cold again. Its had an oil change recently which made it quieter. levels are fine and never been run low.
-
what type of oil are you using?
GM 10/40 is very good value on trade, i would suggest 3 oil changes, 1 every 500 miles, then see what happens.
I did that for around 2k on my 2.2, made it much quieter!
-
Thanks for the replies. Just went out and lifted the bonnet to have a good listen. The tapping noise seems to sound like its coming from the top of engine. Its really hard to tell. Does the 2.2 ecotec 16v engine have hydralic tappets? Is there an additive i could use?

Oh, does my car have a cam belt or chain? could that be another possibility with the noise?
-
its belt.
when was the belt last changed? Did the tensioners get done too? It must be done every 4 years / 40k which ever comes first, without fail.
Its worth checking the timing.

yeah and it sounded like a bang of spanners before, sounds sweet as a nut now :y
-
yes it has a cam belt, also possibly sticking cam follower as they are hydraulic, regular oil changes may improve on it as already said.
-
Just drove to work today and all is quiet the first few miles, then the tapping noise reappears. The car drives fine etc.
Sometimes it sounds like its coming from the cat area but its hard to pin point. Could be completely wrong.
-
When was your cambelt changed?
Also one other thing, how much miles did the car do?
I had something similar happen to me once on fiat but this was the result of oil leak, and you said your oil is normal all the time :-/
-
Car has done 107,000 miles. Full vauxhall history. Cambelt done just over a year ago.
-
how much driving do you do a day is it short or long journneys , i had a similar sound and i only normally did short journeys most of the time 2 mies each way to work i gave it a good run and it has now disappered

It needs oil changes more frequently than the 10,000 miles Vx recommend.
It needs changing every 2500/3000 miles.
This may quiet it down.
If it gets noisier when hot, could be timing as suggested.
Don't rely on a Vx dealer getting the timing correct, mine was a tooth out when they changed my cam belt and tensioners.

Hi,
Thanks for all your feedback.
With regards to the cambelt, the prevous owner said that he had it done about a year ago, but yesterday he said that was wrong and it was the fan belt. He never had the cambelt done!!!!
I beleive it hasnt been changed since 40K!!!!!

As said, I wouldn't drive it again until the cambelt, tensioners AND water pump have been changed.

I am in the process of ordering a cambelt kit and water pump. I have found a good deal at www.vauxcentre.co.uk.
Has anyone else bought a kit from there and are they a good quality?
Thanks
