Hi All,
Just got back from Welsh holiday and shall we say some 'spirited' driving on some amazing A roads, but noticed a whining noise sounding a little like a supergharger( I wish I had one!) that increased in pitch with the speed. Seemed to come from the front end but these things are difficult to place.
Otherwise the car was spot on.
Tell me it aint my diff :-/

Although a lot of noises can be hard to pinpoint, there is no way on this earth a shagged diff sounds anything like a charger.
Besides which, you'll know full well when the diff is droning, and you'll definately know what sort of direction it's coming from.
Open the window and listen the next time the noise comes on.

Sounds like it could be alternator

It could be various things, but if you think it was from the front & speed related ... what about wheel bearing(s)? :-/
-
Is it related to engine speed or car speed?
If engine speed related, could be cam belt. Might be worth taking the cover off and checking it's tensioned correctly and the tensioners are in good condition.

I had a similar noise in my old MV6. Turned out to be the alternator bearings. If it were mine though , I'd definately check the cam belt tensioner to be sure it wasn't that first. Could be expensive if that seizes. :-?

Just to add, alternator electrical issues or poor suppression can lead to an engine speed related whine through the audio system.

It just appears to be when on the move, albeit when booting it quite heavily. The cambelt and tensioners are about 6 months old so doubt it would be those.

i get a whine in mine as well but only when the other halfs in the car ;D it does sound like a bearing

Is the noise only apparent when on the move or is it there when stationary. I had a similar problem recently but the noise was there when all the time. Replaced the alternator and problem solved! :y
