OK, so new brakes, filters and an oil change on the 2.5TD auto. Took it out for a good thrash on the M27 en-route to the MOT station.
I was in the fast lane and the van in front of me slowed, then sped up again. Partly out of wanting to keep the revs up, partly out of habit with the manual, I dumped it down a gear.
Next thing I know, the tacho is off the scale and the throttle is refusing to play. I ninja lane-changed to the outside but couldn't get the speed back up.
So I threw it in to the hard shoulder with me hazards on and went in to fault diagnostic mode. I saw the temperature gauge was way past the red line and reasoned the car had engaged limp mode.
I struggled on to the MOT station and sure enough, it passed the emissions test. However.
As I left, the temperature sprang right back up. I pulled in to a park and gave it half an hour to cool off. When I started the electrics, the gauge read 90 or so, perfectly acceptable. But sure enough, once I pulled away it went right to the line again.
Having had it outside the house cooling for three hours, I topped up the water (the computer was complaining and, yes, the level was pretty damn low). Took it off for a test drive at 30mph and... the temp hit the red line in under two minutes and car started limping again.
So, what have I done? No leaks apparent, cooling fans kick in just fine... did I kill the thermostat? Please, God, tell me I didn't :|
Thanks
Tom

water pump :y

Oh God damn it.
OK, thanks markey. So now what? There's no Haynes for this model and no how-to in the maintenance sub-forum.
Anyone able to walk me through it please?
-
carnt walk you bud never done one but iirc there not too bad :y
-
water pump :y
Yup Water pump
It's on the shaft that carries the Viscous Fan (LH thread BTW)
Quite an easy job, drain the radiator & block first
Replace with one that has Brass vanes

Wow. That's cool, thanks. And I always thought PDFs were sent by the devil to try us...

that a great haynes manual lol

let us know how you get on bud?

Pump and o-ring on order, 2-3 days though :(
Checked with the local stealer, out of curiosity, and they'd want two hours labour at 150+. So, um, it'll be a DIY job then :)
Would you guys appreciate piccychurs for the guide section? They'd mostly be of stripped threads and bleeding knuckles, but if it'd help...

Guides are always appreciated. :y

Just be careful the parents don't find out! ;D

Sound advice.
By the way, I unclipped a sensor to get the oil filter out, as described in the how-to. Pretty sure I forgot to plug it back in. What does this sensor do and could it have any bearing on this problem?

Hi guys. Made a start on removing the old pump, so hopefully when the new one turns up I can just slap it in and put all the other bits back on.
Question: I'm trying to remove the rad and IC hoses but they're secured with a type of clip I've not come across before. Do I just need to squeeze it? Can I do so by hand or will I need something to compress it?
Thanks
Tom

molegrips work well
there are special hoseclip pliers that work as well.
but yes, self gripping clips, just squeeze tabs together to release.

Wonderful. Better go see if my moleys have disintegrated in to a lump of rust or not ^_^
Thanks matey

Right, almost got the rad disconnected. There's one more hose and a banjo union standing in my way.
When I tried to undo the banjo, it pissed oil all down my arm. What's that all about? I need to d/c it to remove the radiator but I don't want to lose, say, the auto fluid all down the road... anybody able to shed some light please?
It's located on the rear offside corner of the rad, almost half way up:

its the oil cooler for the auto trans, it will only dribble a bit out it wont empty the box mate!!

further more you dont need to remove the rad to change the water pump? so why are you???? :o
-
Um... er... cos that PDF guide said I should.
I can't see how else I'd get at the viscous fan, it's right up against the rad... I couldn't get a finger down there let alone any tools or be able to see what I was doing.
Thanks for info mate.

32mm spanner on it and jammed with a long screwdriver and it pops undone some are easier than others to undo and its a lefthand thread, never had a problem?? belt off egr loosened if need to 2 bolts and pump is off takes around 45 mins first time then about 20 to 30 the second time you do it??
-
Do you go in from the top or the bottom? Pardon the expression.
The guide linkd on the previous page reckons the fan and pump are on a common shaft, so surely you'd need some clearance to withdraw the assembly? Pardon me being thick, but I can't envision how this would work without more space (currently occupied by the radiator).
Sorry, I don't mean to be such a noob, I'll have another look at it tomorrow, going dark now :)
-
OK, so pardon the ignorance but how does one untension this 'ere tensioner?

OK, scratch my last, got the belt and viscous fan off now.
New problem - getting the WP pulley off. Four bolts are out, but it ain't budging. I'm assuming a crowbar is not advisable...
