My heads are off the car, and therefore the oil cooler is a peice of cake to get at.
Car has done circa 158k miles. For a long time before head removal, it's been running on neat water due to the leak.
Car is a 2000, "W" facelift - so questionable as to whether or not cooler is stainless.
I'm aware the threads sometimes break on removal, so I'm keen not to touch it, (and just re-seal the plate) if there's no chance it could be damaged.
If however, there's a chance it could have been damaged by a few K on neat water, I'm keen just to replace it...

Weigh up probable cost of new cooler against labour involved should it go further down the line. Only you can answer that.
I would say a couple of K on water will be neither here nor there. A couple of years on water, however......
If there are no signs of contamination of the coolant now, and it's going to get decent coolant from now on, I'd say it's not going to get any worse.... :-/
Besides, you'll be bored in a couple of weeks anyway, so you might relish an oil cooler change. :-/ Either that or you'll have sold the car for a new project so who cares either way? :P

Hang on a minute... If the heads are off, surely you could remove the oil cooler complete with plate, inspect it and then put it back without disturbing the threads?

you will only keep the car a week, save 100 notes and only replace if it fails :y

Yes, but I've observed that the "sat in bits" stage is normally the longest phase in the JamesV6CDX car ownership life cycle. :P
