Title: Running hot

recently changed leaking oil cooler and leaking rad,car started overheating when work was finished,discovered header tank had split at filler neck,dont know why.Replaced header tank.Now the car runs much hotter than it ever did.Drive for about 5 miles(until stat opens?)and the temp gauge goes up to 100 and stays there road speed/engine speed doesnt seem to make much difference although if stopped in traffic for a while it will creep up to the red.
Any ideas anyone?
Fans seem to be working ok. :-/

I wonder if there is still some oil in the cooling system, after the oil cooler failure, that is a causing a blockage somewhere ...

Possibly,I have flushedit quite a few times and it looks clean,but you never know I suppose. :y

would expect it to boil over if the bottle is not holding pressure. I beleive the cap holds it at 13(or is it 30) psi to prevent it boiling. Maybe the oil has eaten the bottle slightly, or weekend it, if its still the original bottle, and its split with the pressure. Or a blockage as said. Anyway, i would bet it stops over heating with a new bottle. :-)

Bottle replaced a couple of days ago Chris,I am thinking thermostat at the moment,or I was when I went to bed last night,but I drove for about 15 miles this morning and it seemed ok.I did swap the thermostat switch on the rad last night though so maybe I found the problem? :-/

Hi, I am having similar probs after an oil cooler failed. Have changed the thermostat at same time so ruled that out. Fans work as advertised, so am looking towards rad, coolant looks clear but when I flush it there is always a few "bits" for want of a better word in the water. I know the rad has small pipes and rad flush can only get to the face of the blockage, not all the way through it. I know my failure was bad (the entire coolant system turned to sludge within 170 miles of achange), but I am going to change the rad and water pump now (cambelt due anyway).

I always flush my rad with Fernox form B&Q but you will have to remove the rad to do it. Oh and don't get any on your grass  ::)
