Hi again
I am still having issues with my car cutting out. I have fitted a new IACV and cleaned verious pipes.
The car is still cutting out at roundabouts etc but not all the time. It seems to not do it some much when the heater/cool air venalation systems is turned off.
Also, it is hesitating through all gears and revs.
Is the MAF to blame or could it be an air leak. I am on holiday for the next week in cornwall and would like to know roughly what it is so i can try and avoid brake down.
Thank you
Dave

Model, year?, have you done Paper Clip/ Pedal test for any fault codes.
-
Hi
It is a 98 2.5 v6. I have done the paper clip test and it came back with a 57. I think this is from where i changed the AICV. Do fault codes clear themselves from memory or is there something i need to do.
These may seem like really lame questions, but i haven't had the car long and tried to let the local garage do most things. They seem uninterested in this issue.
Thanks.

I'm only in Brackley, if you want the codes cleared to see what comes back.
Can't do much for a few days though.

my hesitation turned out to be sensor problem..
worth reading the codes..
and I must note on a car 98 model some gaskets may need to change to prevent air leak..

Hi
The only code appearing is a code 57 which is a low voltage to AICV. Everything seems tight.
The boy. Would you be able to help. I am normally free on a friday or sunday.
thank you
It is driving me nuts.

Not harm in me having a look. Not available this weekend, think next weekend is looking tight as well.
You could pop it up one evening - as the evenings are longer now...

Hi The Boy.
Thank you. I am in cornwall this coming week and get back on saturday.
The week begining the 15th june would be good. An evening would be ok for me too.
Let me know what would be best for you. I don't want to put you out.
Thanks again

Hi Dave
To answer your original question. Yes the MAF can cause the car to cut out. I experienced cutting out when on a trailing throttle approaching roundabouts and junctions. Bit embarassing in an auto.
An expert on the forum suggested diconnecting the wires to the sensor to "prove it". The car ran fine without the sensor connected. I suspect it runs rich with the sensor disconnected. While I waited for the parts, I drove in sports mode which helped keep the revs up.
I tried a secondhand MAF but that was as bad. I bought an aftermarket one off EBay (about£38) and fitted that and it has been fine since.
Take the opportunity to get the codes read by someone like the Boy as there is no substitute for actually seeing the car in the flesh!

Hi
Thanks for your ideas. Yesterday I did disconnect the sensor on the maf (this being the lower connector on the air intake pipes) and the car fired up fine but died after a few seconds of idle. what does that mean. Car then ran as before when reconnected.
Today i took the air flow meter of the car. It looked ok and all pipes were fine. I then put it back but it now starts but dies straight away.
I then did the paperclip test and it came back with two codes.
71 - Intake air temp voltage low
73 -Mass air flow sensor voltage high.
One might have something to do with my experiment yesterday. But which one. Car will not stay going now. Should i get a new a nearly new afm and see if that helps.
Thanks

Will it make it to deepest Brackley?
-
Just about reversed two foot in to Car port area and that was with a lot of throttle so no. Wish i hadn't had a look now.
:-/

ok reset the fault codes stored yesterday. and read them again. To do this you will need to turn the ignition on 20 times - no need to fully start the engine but do wait until the EMS light goes out before surning off. The engine management system clears codes after 20 clean starts.
Have a very close look at the sensor - I've just had one on a veccy B that had a hairling crack in it. the other thing to look at is the wiring and connectors: to understand why you have two voltage faults

Bugger :'(
Where in Buckingham are you?

Hi
Tried the 20 start thing but the two codes are still there.
Checked sensors and they seem clean and tight.
I am on the stratford road in buckingham.
Really feed up now. but glade i made it back from cornwall under my ownsteam and not on the back of a rac lorry.

Expect to be un-fed up pretty soon then if the boy is on his way with Mr Tech2 ;D

fault found fairly quickly, proven by swapping maf with the one on my mv6. a rare case of genuine maf failure.
-
worth shopping around for a replacement. I got a MAF for a veccy B of fleabay recently for about £30 instead of the £80 that most people wanted.
It didn't look inferior quality or anthing wrong with it

Thank you The Boy and everyone else for your help and pointers.
