Title: advice on egr needed
Post by: mathewst on 15 June 2009, 11:57:47
My egr valve is blocked( it makes a loud thump when the car is started while engine is hot) and "My Naff Code Reader" confirmes the egr fault.
So I have three possible solutions.
1. Try to clean it
2. Buy a used one ( around 30 pounds)
3. Buy an aftermarket one from Delphi (90 pounds).

Any suggestions guys?

Being 'carefull' with money ......  ::) I'd give it a thorough cleaning before I parted with any cash and go from there. You could always blank it off aftrwards.  :y  :y

make a metal plate to blank off between the valve itself and the flexy pipe. Take the EGR valve off & you'll find a gasket under it, if you copy it but without the hole in the middle and re-fit that instead of the gasket ..... you've blanked the EGR off  ;). The valve will then open & close to its heart content ..... but won't know it's not actually doing anything to save the planet.  :y  :y

I've had the EGR blanked off on my V6 for years now & it's passed the emissions part of the MOT test every time.

I'm sure that others who have a better understanding od rge EGR will be able to elaborate.  :y

If a fault is being logged then you will have to fix this before thinking about blanking off the valve ports.
If the code relates to voltage low or voltage high then you either have a dead valve or a wiring fault.
If the fault refers to position errors then a good clean of the valve should fix it.

Remove the valve then use paint stripper to dissolve the carbon deposits around the valve plunger. The plunger should move easily.

If the fault persists then its likely that the internal position sensor is dead and you need a new valve after all.
